What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

Registered dietitians are qualified to assess, diagnose and treat dietary problems or nutritional needs. They also tend to help clients with special dietary requirements or medical conditions. To be a dietitian, you’ve got to be registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Many dietitians work within the NHS as opposed to privately, although you can still find private dietitians to help advise you on your eating habits. Whereas nutritionists are more likely to be the ones advising on weight loss or sport nutrition. Nutritionists can be registered with the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), but they don't have to be.

What qualifications do you need to be a nutritionist?

To become qualified as a nutritionist, I had to complete a course run by the UKVRN. After completing the course, I became qualified as a registered nutritionist. This means that all my clients can check my qualifications and experience online. Clients can therefore be confident in my abilities, as they know that I'm qualified under a trustworthy organisation.

What’s the most common reason why clients come to you?

Weight loss is the most common reason that new clients come to me. They often find it difficult to know how to get the right nutrients into their diets without feeling hungry or unsatisfied. But over the last few years, I’ve had more and more people coming to me with IBS-related issues. I think that's because more people are recognising the symptoms of IBS and are getting diagnosed. They then come to nutritionists or dietitians for guidance on how to alter their eating habits to help relieve their symptoms.

Before working with Anna I was in a stressful job, overweight and unable to motivate myself to exercise. Even though I thought I was eating relatively healthily I was exhausted and had started to feel ill. As soon as I spoke with Anna I could feel my mindset shifting. It has been transformational. I’ve lost over 11kg so far, have gone from no exercise to running 5k three times a week and have a much deeper understanding of nutrition and health. Anna works from the inside out. She has incredible judgement about how to support and challenge you and provides you with very practical and usable tools. This is not an out-of-the-box experience. It’s completely tailored to support you with your vision and goals. With Anna’s help and her warm non-judgmental approach I’ve astonished myself by how quickly I’m making changes. I was astonished by how effective BWRT is too. I wasn’t expecting for us to use it, but when we did it completely changed how I felt about something. I cannot recommend Anna highly enough. It’s been one of the most important investments I’ve ever made.

I've been with Chris for a month now and the results are incredible. I'm feeling and thinking better about myself and the nutrition guidance is second to none. He's tailored everything to my needs and is always thorough with feedback each week and helps answer questions! Can't recommend him enough.
