What do you love most about your job?

From the moment I started teaching students whilst I was still studying for my A Levels, I realised how powerful the teaching experience was. Watching as my students slowly grasp a challenging concept, or are able to play something they had never been able to before is an experience you can't get from any other job.
My ambition has and always will be to help other people by striving to support and nurture them to meet their full potential. Nothing is more satisfying to me than knowing that what I do has had a positive affect on peoples lives.
In this profession I also get the opportunity to meet and get to know every one of my students over a long period of time, giving me the privilege of getting to know some truly fascinating people.

What inspired you to start your own business?

My first experience of teaching was very informal, based mainly at my parents house and with limited resources. After advertising for more students I was actually hired for a time by a local music school, who I worked for throughout my time in sixth form; this gave me my first experience teaching through another agency. Although I was given a certain amount of autonomy, and I didn't have to worry about resources and accommodation; I didn't get to deliver the level of service I wanted to and it meant accepting their pay policies and terms and conditions.

When I moved away to University, I decided to start teaching privately again in order to continue developing my teaching experience and to support my 'student lifestyle'. At this point I had registered officially with the Registry of Guitar Tutors (now the RGT@LCM) and began developing not only my teaching styles, but also my 'brand' as a music professional.

After graduating from University I made the decision to move into classroom music teaching and began my teacher training in a secondary school in Essex. After successfully completing my teacher training and qualifying as a secondary school teacher I stayed at the school I trained in for 4 years before moving to a Grammar School in Kent to become a Head of Music. However, after undertaking this role for a year I started to realise that I had not only moved away from some of the elements of teaching that had made me want to move into this profession in the first place, but also that the job was starting to have an impact on me personally. I therefore decided that it was time to leave classroom teaching and set up my private teaching business again as J Horsey Music Tuition; in order to get back to the elements of teaching that made me fall in love with the profession in the first place.

I write music in my spare time and have worked with several bands in England & Australia, but mainly as a guitarist, would be curious to see if it’s possible to teach myself to sing? Thanks
