Security Guard Services Near You

While CCTV is a good deterrent for criminals, unfortunately, it cannot stop them in the act should they wish to steal or damage your property. Having a security guard acts as a physical barrier between thieves and your property.

Whether you want 24-hour protection or cover for specific hours, we’ll help you find the right security guard service to keep your business safe.

What is the responsibility of a Security Guard?

A security guard will patrol a specific location to prevent crime from taking place. They are the eyes and ears of the premises and will take action such as ejecting people from the building should they be causing a disturbance or have criminal intentions. Often, the very presence of a security guard is enough to deter criminals, especially as their job involves monitoring any suspicious behaviour. This includes physically patrolling as well as monitoring any CCTV systems.

Security guards can perform a citizen's arrest and will detain suspects in a holding room while police are called. At the end of each shift, they will log any incidents, and can also carry out random services of areas or vehicles if required. Some security guards may also be trained in first aid, or be specially trained to deal with other emergencies. Though their primary role is to protect the building and the contents within it.

Can armed Security Guards arrest you?

All security guards, whether they are armed or not, do not have any more legal powers than a citizen. However, they can detain you until the authorities arrive to take further action.

Armed security guards are also only permitted in certain situations, and must meet strict criteria to operate including having a Security Industry Authority licence. Typically, armed security guards are referred to bodyguards or close protection officers.

Do Security Guards have to identify themselves?

That depends on where you are located, and the type of security guard you employ. Usually, a security guard will have to identify themselves via a visible badge or form of identification. They could also wear clothing that has the word ‘security’ printed on it, especially at events or festivals. However, in some instances, security guards work undercover and will wear plain clothes. Though, they must still be able to identify themselves when required.

What to look for in a Security Guard

For your premises to be protected, the security guard needs to be very observant. They may be required to monitor a large area at once, so must be able to multitask. On that note, physical fitness is essential, especially as they may be required to chase after suspects or apprehend them until police arrive. Basic principles such as honesty and integrity are also key, as they are there to serve your business and prevent criminal activity from taking place. In some instances, a smart appearance may also be required, especially for event security.

All of which is in addition to having the correct credentials and preferably, experience in challenging scenarios related to the job.

Different types of Security Guards

Security is a broad topic and covers a range of different services that can be supplied by an individual or an agency. The type of security guard that will work best for your business will depend on the type of assets that need protecting.

In-House Security

An in-house security guard will be hired to regularly patrol your premises. It could be a member of staff you employ or be brought in by an external company. In-house security could be one or several guards, depending on the level of cover you need. Their role is to protect the building and monitor any suspicious activity.

Event Security

Events can pose several security and safety issues. Event security will ensure orderly lines are formed, and that your guests or high-value assets remain protected. Security guards will also be looking out for suspicious objects or activity. This may include undertaking bag, vehicle and premises searches to ensure those inside the event remain safe. The use of metal detectors and physical screening systems at the event entrance may also be in use. In some cases, event security staff are also required to wear smart attire, depending on the type of event.

Personal Security

A personal security guard is responsible for one person, such as a celebrity or anyone who is at high risk of attack. They will either follow the individual wherever they go or be stationed outside their home or business. Personal security is a great way of offering peace of mind to anyone who needs additional protection, especially while carrying out their day to day duties.

Armed Security Guards

Armed security guards are specially trained officers that carry weapons. They are only permitted in certain regions and scenarios and must have a strict list of credentials to be able to operate. Armed security guards are most commonly used to protect important individuals or high-value assets. They are highly professional individuals who are thoroughly trained in all aspects of security.

How do I check a Security Guard’s credentials?

Various organisations offer security guard training. Most commonly, firms such as SIA, BSIA and IPSA. Every country and indeed security guard type will have required documentation and training. If you are looking to hire a security guard, you should ask for proof of credentials, as well as inquiring if they have undertaken similar work in the past.

Is it possible to hire an online Security Guard?

While some aspects of security can be done remotely (such as monitoring CCTV), the purpose of a security guard is to have a physical presence at your location. Though in some instances, it’s possible to have a system that alerts security services if your CCTV detects an intruder. In which case, the security guard will only attend should they be alerted.
