What’s the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?
Registered dietitians are qualified to assess, diagnose and treat dietary problems or nutritional needs. They also tend to help clients with special dietary requirements or medical conditions. To be a dietitian, you’ve got to be registered with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). Many dietitians work within the NHS as opposed to privately, although you can still find private dietitians to help advise you on your eating habits. Whereas nutritionists are more likely to be the ones advising on weight loss or sport nutrition. Nutritionists can be registered with the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN), but they don't have to be.
What qualifications do you need to be a nutritionist?
To become qualified as a nutritionist, I had to complete a course run by the UKVRN. After completing the course, I became qualified as a registered nutritionist. This means that all my clients can check my qualifications and experience online. Clients can therefore be confident in my abilities, as they know that I'm qualified under a trustworthy organisation.
What’s the most common reason why clients come to you?
Weight loss is the most common reason that new clients come to me. They often find it difficult to know how to get the right nutrients into their diets without feeling hungry or unsatisfied. But over the last few years, I’ve had more and more people coming to me with IBS-related issues. I think that's because more people are recognising the symptoms of IBS and are getting diagnosed. They then come to nutritionists or dietitians for guidance on how to alter their eating habits to help relieve their symptoms.

I used to be terrified of flights. JP has helped me overcome my fear of flights in a couple of sessions.

I went to JP at very short notice in order to prepare for my driving test, I was extremely anxious and nervous after failing my first test, whilst I did still have a sick feeling in my tummy after the sessions, and the panic was still there at times, I managed to compose myself enough to get through the test. Passing my driving test has helped me gain confidence and I'm so grateful to JP for all his help and working with me at such short notice. ☺️
