What should I consider before choosing an Architect?

Here are some points to consider when hiring an Architect:

  • It is important that the architect is registered and provides you with a portfolio of work with recent images. It is also recommended to complete a site visit where the architect might point out the particular features of that project.

  • Architects need to monitor the project throughout so it is also important that they have a good working relationship with experienced contractors.

  • Some architectural services firms only do international work. If you have a small project, you might want to consider a small firm that can give you its full attention.

  • Your local professional should work with you on your creative ideas and ensure that you get the best value for money for your budget.

How long will an Architectural Project take?

A building project might take just six months or a couple of years to complete. Make sure you choose an architecture firm that you will be comfortable working with for the long term. You may meet an architect you like in the initial meeting phase but when the project gets underway, you may be working more closely with a different colleague. Make sure you know which individuals you will be working with throughout your project.

Do you need planning permission for a side return?

A side return extension is considered to be permitted development (PD). It does not need planning permission as long as the extension is within two metres of a boundary and the maximum eaves height is no higher than three metres.

How much do Architects cost?

Hiring an architectural services firm is a great investment as it can help increase the value of your home.

The cost will vary not according to the size of your extension and new rooms but how many floors are being changed or added.

Costs will normally include the design advice, on-site survey, professional CAD drawings, drawing amendments, planning applications and planning revisions.

Your expert architectural services firm will be able to help make the changes you are looking for or create a new build. They will also be able to answer any questions you may have. Use Bark to get free quotes and find a qualified architect today.

What should I look for in an Architect?

Architects need to be fully qualified, which involves five years at a university recognised by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and have completed a minimum of two years’ practical experience.

Most architects then apply for Chartered Membership from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

What can Architects help with?

Architectural services firms can provide complete drawing and design services, submit planning applications, check building regulations, undertake Structural Engineer calculations for loft conversions, extensions, internal alterations and new builds.

Architects also manage the entire process with the local authorities and should keep clients informed of the progress of their application along the way.

What do you love most about your job?

Designing something that will enhance our clients’ lives on a daily basis and provide a space where they will create memories with their friends and families is rewarding enough. But the challenge of problem solving by creating a solution to satisfy the needs of our clients, whilst staying within their specific budget, can also be incredibly fun!

What inspired you to start your own business?

After operating a construction company for many years, we saw first-hand how most clients were simply not receiving good value for money from their architects or architectural designers. Many architects demand very high fees for drawings where the logistical implications of actually building their design simply haven’t been considered – this often leaves clients with useless designs that are massively over budget or just impractical to build. We started BAYA Design because we felt that our experience allowed us to offer a much better service at much more affordable prices.

Why should our clients choose you?

We don’t just understand how to design buildings but we have experience in constructing them too – our clients see the benefits of this during the building phase of their projects. We offer incredible value for money with our fixed price packages and our efficient systems keep our clients updated with automated emails at every stage of the process. Our friendly team are easy to reach and highly knowledgeable.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

We will always conduct a site survey as part of our service to ensure that measurements are completely accurate. After this stage of the process is completed, we include a series of screen sharing calls with our clients free of charge to work through the design until it is just right.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

We always ask our clients if they’d prefer our surveyor to wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting a measured survey at their home. When requested, our surveyor will wear an FFP2 grade face mask as well as disposable gloves to ensure the safety of our clients.
