Pilates with Lorna

DEVON

Pilates can benefit everyone as all exercises focus on: • developing core strength, • improving posture • increasing flexibility • better balance • injury prevention Pilates is an exercise programme based on 34 specific exercises developed by Joseph Pilates. It is far gentler than aerobic classes but it will still boost circulation and provide long-term benefits, without putting unnecessary stress on the body’s joints. It can also help to sculpt and streamline the body. Pilates exercises are low impact and performed in a slow and controlled way to really work specific muscle groups. Quality of movement is far more important than quantity and speed. Everyone can participate as I am a fully qualified instructor and able to modify or progress exercises to suit individual needs. So, it doesn’t matter what age you are, gender or fitness level, Pilates can work for you. If you’re looking to achieve a specific goal, are expecting or just had a baby, or you just want to move and have fun, I would love to help you.

What do you love most about your job?

I get so much satisfaction in seeing the progress people make and how strengthening their core, improving flexibility and stability can really make a difference and improve their everyday life. Here are a couple of examples from two different client groups:

I started one-to-one Pilates training with Lorna to help my sciatica. After a few months my back pain has become almost non-existent, but Lorna continues to work with me on everything else that needs attention - posture, ham strings etc. In fact, tightness and problems in almost every part of my body! I enjoy the sessions and cannot thank Lorna enough for her patience and understanding of what is needed to rejuvenate the life of a 75 year old lady.

As a runner, returning from some time out due to injury, I was advised by many people to take Pilates classes to keep injury free. I took a couple of different classes at a few different places, but it wasn’t until I took a class from Lorna I knew I had found what I needed. Her classes are dynamic and change each week. She is brilliant at getting the most out of whatever your ability level is and fun to boot. I am pleased to say that I have remained injury free since starting 6 months ago and as an added bonus got a PB in my latest event - thanks, Lorna!

What inspired you to start your own business?

When diagnosed with Osteopenia (the onset of Osteoporosis) 5 years ago, I turned to Pilates to increase bone density, strengthen bones and improve balance and core strength, all conducive to preventing future falls and breaks. I discovered that the Pilates method offered so much more, it gave me a valuable insight into how my body works, improving and changing postural alignment habits, toning muscles and increasing flexibility. I have never looked back!

My passion for Pilates grew as I started to understand the methodology behind it. I then witnessed my father slowly give up, sitting in a chair day after day, in the end he lost the mobility of his legs, and through immobility developed a bed sore, resulting in septicaemia and his passing. If only he had kept moving!

This further fuelled my passion to get others moving, so much so, I trained to become a fully qualified Pilates Instructor, specialising in exercise for older adults. I gave up my job as a Customer Services Director in London and moved to Plymouth in March 18 to focus solely on teaching.

I am passionate about encouraging people to move their bodies in a safe and correct way so they can truly benefit from exercise and achieve their goals.

Why should our clients choose you?

I give 100% to my lesson planning and classes and even though you will participate in a group, you will feel that the class was tailor made for you. As well as feeling the benefits physically, you will also have fun, make new friends and increase your overall health and well being. But don't just take my word for it, here is an excerpt from a testimonial from one of my customers:

I know that Lorna puts a lot of effort into preparation for her classes, and her hard work really pays off; I always feel confident that at the end of the hour I’ll have learnt something new and be feeling good about myself. I have met some really lovely people through Lorna’s classes, some of whom I now count as real friends - and I invariably come away feeling happy and uplifted with a big beam on my face, and already looking forward to the next class.
