I’ve always loved music. From listening to my parents’ Motown records when I was a kid to DJing at my friends’ parties at university, music has pretty much been my life. I’d been playing around with music on my computer for years before I became a professional DJ, and I’ve been creating playlists for as long as I can remember. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of seamlessly mixing genres during a set so that everyone can hear a little something of what they’re into. It actually takes a great deal of practice and is definitely harder than it looks.
It’s all the big parties really – weddings, birthdays, Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties, school discos and proms. I also do a lot of corporate events too such as AGMs, conferences, product launches and office Christmas parties. Sometimes I’m hired to DJ at club and pub nights, as well as less regular events such as fashion shows and shop or gallery openings. London is a big, busy place so there’s always something going on that needs a bit of music.
It really depends on the event. For most parties such as weddings and birthdays, I’ll have to supply pretty much everything, from my sound system (decks, speakers and PA system) to disco lights and smoke machine. However, there are many event venues, pubs and clubs who have their own speakers and lights so all I really need is my decks and laptop. I also like to use real vinyl records. So often I will talk to my customer and bring a selection of records from a genre that they’re into for that vintage touch.
