When to book a wedding planner

Consider hiring a wedding planner when:

  • You've just got engaged and want professional guidance from the start

  • You're juggling work and life whilst planning your wedding

  • You're organising a destination wedding or celebration in an unfamiliar location

  • You want access to trusted supplier recommendations and industry contacts

  • You need someone to coordinate the day so you can relax and enjoy it

  • Your wedding involves complex logistics or multiple venues

Full-service planners work best when hired twelve to eighteen months before your wedding, whilst day coordinators can be brought in closer to the date.

How to choose the right wedding planner

When comparing wedding planners, look at their portfolio to see if their style matches your vision. Ask about their experience with weddings similar to yours in size, style and budget.

Discuss what's included in their packages, how they charge and whether they have relationships with venues and suppliers in your area. Check reviews from previous couples to gauge their communication style and reliability.

Bark lets you explore local wedding planners so you can find someone who understands your vision and takes the stress out of planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a wedding planner cost?

Bark's research shows wedding planner costs vary by service level. Full-service planners typically charge 10 to 15 per cent of your total wedding budget, or flat fees ranging from £2,000 to £10,000.

Partial planning services cost £1,000 to £3,000 depending on what's included. Day-of coordination typically costs £500 to £1,500. Luxury wedding planners and destination wedding specialists may charge higher rates.

What's the difference between a wedding planner and a coordinator?

A wedding planner guides you through the entire planning process from engagement to wedding day, helping with venue selection, supplier sourcing, design and budget management.

A wedding coordinator focuses on the final weeks and the wedding day itself, creating timelines, liaising with suppliers and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Planners are involved for months, whilst coordinators typically join four to eight weeks before your wedding.

Do I really need a wedding planner?

Wedding planners save time, reduce stress and often save money through supplier relationships and negotiation skills. They're particularly valuable for destination weddings, complex celebrations or couples with demanding schedules.

If you enjoy planning and have time to research suppliers and coordinate details, you might manage without one. Day-of coordinators offer a middle ground, handling logistics so you can enjoy your wedding day.

Martine was communicative throughout for my father’s 90th birthday and the result was a very smooth event with great food - canapés starter; mains brought to the table hot and mini desserts. They are very flexible and can do buffet style if preferred. Out of all caterers, this was the best menu choice for the season (we chose coq au vin for a winter party meal, which was ideal). Always ask for full staff/food/utensil or cutlery hire costing as you go along so no surprises at the end and Martine is happy to add or remove elements to suit your needs as long as you do that early enough in the booking. Overall would recommend for an event of 13 or more people and Martine was flexible when our numbers fluctuated once I got final RSVPs through. Thanks

I honestly couldn’t have done this without Nia. Under so much pressure and limited time, she stayed calm, communicated perfectly, and guided me with the best suggestions. The event turned out beautiful thank you for everything

We used Taylors catering for my father's wake. Louisa was fantastic, she went the extra mile by visiting my father's partner to discuss set up and arrangement which she really appreciated having never organised such event before. The communication and pricing was great and everyone complimented the food

First and foremost, a wedding planner is responsible for the planning and the logistics of your wedding. This includes finding and securing a venue, which is an important first step as all of your suppliers will be asking where and when the wedding is. A wedding planner will also source said suppliers for things such as the catering, entertainment, and the flowers. They are also responsible for the scheduling of the day, to ensure there is enough time allotted for each element of your ceremony and reception. All in all, a wedding planner is there to make sure the day runs smoothly and that your vision comes to life.

The cost of a wedding planner will depend on several factors. For example, the size of the wedding and the location.

A wedding planner should be highly organised, especially when they are in charge of the timings, managing the budget, and the logistics of the whole day. Aside from this though, they should be someone who is a great listener. They should be highly experienced in wedding planning, and be able to problem-solve. Most of all, they should possess the ability to put you at ease, especially as their job is to take away the stress for you.

Not all weddings are created equal! Depending on what you had in mind for your big day, you should opt for a wedding planner who specialises in the level of help you need.

  • Full Service - A full service wedding planner will quite literally plan every aspect of your wedding. It’s ideal for couples who are too busy to take on the planning themselves. They are with you from the start and will work with you on all the big decisions as well as the finer details.
  • Partial Service - A partial wedding planner is for couples who know what they want but need help with some of the last-minute details. They tend to come in a few weeks up to around 3 months before your big day. Partial wedding planners help elevate that last-minute stress when most of your wedding is already taken care of, but you want to ensure the finishing touches run smoothly.
  • Destination - If you plan on marrying abroad then opt for a destination wedding planner. They are best placed to help you with all the arrangements including travel. They will also research the best suppliers and entertainment. Plus, they’ll take care of any other hidden details that need to be ironed out when your wedding is happening in a different country.
  • Weekend Wedding - Weekend weddings are those which are spread over several days. They require an increased level of planning and logistics to take care of your guests, compared with a regular wedding. For example, a rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding, and even a post-wedding brunch the next day. They will also factor in the entertainment.

There are no qualifications that a wedding planner has to have to be able to operate. It’s something that anyone can do. So, the best way to check if they are the right fit for you is to have a consultation with them. Be sure to do your research, check their reviews, and have a look at the weddings they have planned previously to get an idea of what they could achieve for you.

While your wedding planner will be taking care of the finer details for you, it’s still a good idea to think about the kind of day you want.

For example, the size of the wedding, colour schemes, what type of flowers, and the overall theme. There are a lot of decisions to be made so it can be helpful to talk with your partner beforehand about what you both envision. That way you can be on the same page with your wedding planner right from the start.

Also, be sure to inform your wedding guests of the date of the wedding at the earliest opportunity, so that they have time to arrange transport or book the time off work.

Wedding planners are there to help you organise your big day, and so compared to making impulse purchases because you’re stressed or simply don’t know what you want - absolutely!

It’s also possible to find a wedding planner that specialises in budget-friendly weddings too.

Remember, while they are doing all of the planning, it is still you who is in control. Your wedding planner will work with you to create a budget and present the costs to you before they go ahead and book. If the budget is the absolute priority for you, then you should stress this from the start.

Yes! After all, you only get one wedding day and so it needs to feel like a special occasion for both of you. Plus for all your family and friends who will be attending too. Given most people are new to planning a wedding, having a professional take care of everything for you can result in a day that far exceeds what you could have achieved alone.

Even if you already have an exact vision in mind, bringing that to life can be tricky, especially if you lack time or expertise in planning and logistics. Having a consultation with a wedding planner will shed more light on what they can create for you, which will help you get a clearer picture as to whether a wedding planner is right for you.

Choosing a wedding dress is one of the biggest decisions for the whole day. Understandably with so much choice out there, it can be tricky to find a dress that ticks all the right boxes. While the ultimate decision is up to you, a wedding planner can help you source the best bridal boutiques and arrange a fitting for you. They can also help source outfits for the groom as well as bridesmaids dresses.

Absolutely! From choosing your dream venue to finding the perfect musician to play while you walk down the aisle, there's nothing stopping your wedding planner from planning your big day from afar.
