What made you want to become a DJ?

I always loved music as a kid. I played many different musical instruments, as well as being part of the school band. As a consequence, I got to help out with audio setup before school shows at a young age, which made me interested in knowing what makes music sound good. When I was a teenager, I started liking a lot of the well-known DJs at the time, and decided to try it out myself. I immediately loved it, as it merged my love of creating music with different sounds and the technical side of music production. When I left school, I set up my own DJ business, and the rest is history.

What types of events do you DJ for?

I mostly DJ for parties and events that are normally for adults, although I have performed at a few children’s birthday parties in my time. I work at weddings, Christmas parties, birthday parties, as well as proms and the odd corporate event. It’s a nice mix, as each event has a different kind of audience and various kinds of music requests and tastes. It keeps things entertaining for me, which helps me to stay on form.

What’s your go-to party closing song?

Depending on the vibe of the event, it’s usually John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home’. Everyone loves that song, and it always gets people on their feet dancing together. It’s a great closing song for bringing the guests together and leaving on a happy note.

It normally takes around 30-40 minutes for a DJ to set up their equipment but this could change depending on the specific DJ, venue, and event.

Most DJs will offer lighting hire either as an add-on or as part of their general service. Although it really depends on the DJ and the packages they offer. For example, a DJ may include floor lighting as a standard part of the service but then charge extra for more advanced lighting equipment including bar lights and moving headlights.

Most DJs will curate a playlist based on your requests and provide it to you in advance of the event, just to make sure that you’re happy with it and to make tweaks if necessary. How much freedom you give to your DJ in terms of creating the music list is essentially down to you. Some customers prefer to request almost every artist/track on the playlist, whereas others are happy for the DJ to take the reigns and come up with the tracks themselves.
