The Jounetsu Creator is led by Japanese Architectural Designer Haruhito Tomi or known simply as: 'Haru', who has been based in London for over 20 years. Haru's passion lies in "RETROFIT" i.e. turning the derelict/neglected existing into a new delight, in "EXCITEMENT" that tailor-made designs can bring to quality of space and client's lives. Haru thrives on incorporating sustainable methods, circular economy ethos through each project, while paying full attention to their life-cycle emissions and values.

Haru designed and managed the upgrade of my terraced house including the addition of a kitchen extension, top floor shower room, redesigned first floor bathroom and study and a downstairs toilet. The planning application went through smoothly and Haru managed the build efficiently with weekly updates and regular consultations. He kept in touch afterwards to make sure that everything worked. The resulting layout has surpassed my expectations. The kitchen is a triumph with plenty of storage and a wonderful a sense of space. Outside the steep garden has been used to advantage with seating built into the slope. The first floor back addition finally makes sense with a comfortable bathroom and a bonus room which could be a small bedroom or a study. On the design side Haru advised on lighting and fittings to create a sense of calm, coherence and style. Existing bedroom storage was upgraded at minimal cost and cleverly sourced radiators lift all the rooms. Externally dark wood is used to frame the kitchen door and combine with dark grey window frames to push back the concrete lintels from a previous rebuild. The house is now the best version of itself that it could possibly be. Maxine Sacks

Counterbalance was founded by housing architect Gareth Robert Price in 2021. It was born out of a desire to improve housing design through research and help brownfield sites prevail over greenfield developments in the south east of England. As an architect-led organisation we see it as our social responsibility to use our skills and knowledge to become part of the solution in providing sustainable housing and helping protect our natural environment whilst improving existing urban settlements.

Prior to appointing Joe we set up meetings with several architects. Joe really stood out even from the earliest stages, taking detailed measurements and creating a number of early feasibility studies to really give us an idea of what might be possible for the project my wife and I were after (a side and rear extension to our semi-detached period house). Joe, and his assisting architect Bea held our hands all the way through the process from early designs, detailed plans, choice of builder, tendering, planning permission, choice of materials, structural engineering, party wall agreements and on site meetings.
We managed to retain a degre of fluidity with the project, making changes where required and even added drawings and the building of an ensuite bathroom upstairs which we hadnt envisaged at the beginning of the building works.
Details such as a tile plan for the bathroom and showing the showroom kitchen plans to Joe for comment and suggestions were enormously helpful. Ultimately, the proof of the quality was in the finished product. Joe helped us select an excellent builder and the project was delivered on schedule and budget. Joe was always at the end of the phone and it was great fun to work with him. I’d recommend without hesitation and would certainly consider another project in future with Joe and his team should we ever buy another house or consider a loft extension!

Claudia
We were really lucky to have Gosch Design working on two seperate Projects - the first year we had a what looked like a quite forward roof extension - but not easy with Wandsworth council! Simon done a great job convincing the council, overseen all work and added unique features that made the result very special. After this positiv experience Simon started planing for an extension to the back - we called it a "glass box", but Simon's suggestions were so much more - the details added made all the difference! His designs are clear in structure, there is always attention to detail and he never forgets practical aspects which you will appreciate living in the space later. Simon is very gentle diverting clients from ideas that would not work (thank you !) and we still get lots of compliments that the extension is the most perfect addition to the house.

Our clients choose us because we are reliable and diligent and create designs that exceed their expectations. We work transparently with a focus on making the most out of your brief and budget, working closely with you to define the key objectives of your project and the most important elements to develop. We have developed our expertise over many years focussing on extensions and refurbishments, dealing with listed buildings and in conservation areas as well as unlocking more complex infill sites. We work in the housing, public/cultural and educational sectors. At the heart of everything we do is sustainability. We make buildings that are fundamentally sustainable, energy efficient and low in embodied carbon (the energy used in the build). We have built up a knowledge of the challenges and solutions to making existing buildings more efficient and sourcing materials and products which are high in design quality and good for the planet. You will get: high design quality, a great client experience - from project inception through to completion all whilst being sustainable.
As an architect you get to see the whole project from beginning to end, meeting many interesting people along the way - from imagining the project at feasibility and concept stage through to working on the detail of the construction on site. It's a very rewarding process going from drawings and ideas to buildings and then seeing the buildings being used and enjoyed.
Our purpose is to make beautiful and functional buildings which are equally high in craft and good for the planet.
We offer a very high quality service, listening and understanding your needs before considering the best solutions.
We care about the quality of the end result, to create a crafted and robust building that will last.
We do this without inflating the budget to ensure that money is well spent - long lasting and well made.
We care about the environment and ensure our projects do not harm it.
We work both remotely and in person, working across the UK.
We work remotely using online tools (such as Zoom) to provide a seamless service, and are happy to work in either way without compromising the quality of the end product. We often find it useful to meet with our clients in person to begin with and then switch to remove - although we're happy to work either way.
We work remotely, and follow the government's Covid secure guidelines when required to visit clients and sites.
