My name is Jodie Smart, and I am the creator of Sunny Kids Shine ®, which I founded in 2018 to support children in growing up to be secure, resilient, and content young people. I previously worked in education for over ten years, helping children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties (SEMH) and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) - both in mainstream and special provisions. My education includes a BA (Honours) in Childhood Development and Youth Studies, a Mindfulness for Children Diploma and British Sign Language. I also regularly update all Enhanced DBS checks (Disclosure and Barring Service) and CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training. These include training in safeguarding, child protection, trauma, sensory processing, SEND and inclusion, and other areas of relevance and interest.
I used my experience, research, knowledge, and comprehensive understanding to develop the Feelings Detective® model. This program incorporates elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) teamed with the foundations of Emotional Intelligence, Social Skills, Prosocial Behaviours, Self-Love, Kindness, and so much more!
Sunny Kids Shine is an award-winning, tools-based mental health and wellbeing service. Our programs are not a form of therapy intended to ‘fix’ or change you or your children in any way, and it is essential to us that children know there is nothing wrong with them. Everyone has feelings; every feeling is okay, and we can all find our feelings tricky at times. That’s part of being human. Big feelings get smaller when you get to know them and yourselves, just as you are, equipped with the confidence, resilience and contentment to SHINE your beautiful light from the inside out.
Our unique evidence-based programs are all about learning and growing together and are available to children, families and professionals alike. Children learn to N.A.M.E. every feeling in healthy ways, which stands for Notice, Accept, Manage and Express. We don’t believe in simply ‘fighting fires’ or ‘putting plasters on a problem.’ Instead, we work with a holistic approach to create a secure personal, social and emotional foundation from within and an emotionally enabling environment for all.
Our creative, colourful resources and teaching style captivate children, reducing anxiety and making sessions exciting, engaging and fun!
All of our services are delivered via Zoom using fun and engaging learning resources and activities curated for different age groups and abilities, so every lesson offers your child the appropriate level of engagement.
We mainly conduct our sessions using Zoom but do offer some face-to-face sessions. When working in person, we request that you contact us as soon as possible if anyone in your household or setting experiences any potential COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, or has been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. We can then re-schedule your session once you are well enough.

My daughter had therapy for around 3 years after having a serious childhood illness and also a major traumatic bereavement. There were a lot of issues leading up to that point and challenges after. Jennifer has been amazing - from the initial discussion with myself and then with my daughter over the years. She is supportive and non judgemental and respectful of my daughter’s privacy. My daughter now has resilience, emotional intelligence and skills to take her to the next part of her life in university. It was important that someone outside the family was able to work with her due to the complexity of our situation. I cannot thank her enough.

I can’t recommend Jennifer enough. I first came to her feeling lost and overwhelmed, struggling to support my child through anger, attachment, and abandonment issues. From the very first session, she made me feel understood and reassured, creating a safe space where I could be completely open. Jennifer has an incredible gift for explaining complex emotions and behaviours in a way that makes sense, and for helping me see situations from my child’s perspective. After each session, she provided clear, practical activities and strategies I could use at home, which made an immediate difference in how I responded and connected with my child. Although Jennifer never met my child directly, her insights and guidance have transformed the way I parent. I feel more confident, patient, and equipped to help my child feel secure and understood. She is compassionate, professional, and truly invested in helping families thrive. I’m so grateful for her support.

Miranda was incredibly understanding of our individual needs while keeping our relationship as the focus. She offered a safe and supportive space where we both felt heard. Her thoughtful guidance helped us improve our communication and see things from each other’s perspective. I would highly recommend her to any couple looking to overcome communication challenges and build a healthier, stronger relationship.
