Sally Barnett

England

I am a BA (Hons) level Illustrator and Designer who specialises in book cover design, album cover design and internal book illustrations. I work predominantly in pen and ink. But also, watercolour, oil pastels and digital illustration. Trained in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and In-Design. As a professional designer/illustrator, my focus is on meeting the client's brief, the target audience and creating a professional book cover design or illustration that my client will be proud of. It is also important to me that the client is happy throughout the design process. If my client gives me free rein to design a book cover, I will design it so that it is eye-catching, even in a bookshop amongst thousands of books. But also, will invoke the right emotion for that particular book genre and subject. I am always happy to advise my client on choice or style or other, where required. I pride myself on a friendly yet professional approach to my client's needs and I am fully committed to ensuring my client gets the best service, whilst having a good working relationship with me. I am passionate about illustration and always happy to help my client turn their dreams into reality. Recent illustration and design commissions include the National Portrait Gallery in London, National Trust, Montacute House in Somerset and the charity, HAE UK.

What do you love most about your job?

Illustrating and designing has been my absolute passionate from childhood. However, I never thought I could make a career of it when I left school. It was not the best of times to succeed in the industry and I was not ready. I can say that now. So I began a career in engineering. I loved being an engineer; the designing, the problem solving, the working relationships, but I always hoped one day I would return to Illustration and Design. However, that dream never got any nearer for me. In 2013 I took voluntary redundancy from my engineer job and almost immediately enrolled on a BA (Hons) Illustration and Design with University of Hertfordshire. I am now doing what I have always wanted to do, but I have the advantage of my wealth of experience in life and my work that I didnt have when I left school. I love every minute of it; the designing, the problem solving, the working relationships.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I have always imagined myself as an artist; isolated, but free to decide when and where I worked. My work life to date, has been anything but isolating. The main reason why I started working for myself is so that I can control a balance. I have really enjoyed working in a team and I do miss it now I am a professional Freelancing Illustrator/Designer, which is why I volunteer at local charities and organisations when I can; for the social aspect but also because I like to be useful. I can now control the balance of both worlds.

Why should our clients choose you?

I pride myself on a friendly and professional approach to my client's needs. I am fully committed to ensuring my client gets the best service, whilst having a good working relationship with me.
