With over 30 years of graphic design and illustration experience behind me, I thought it was time to do something I enjoy a bit more, and get the paintbrushes out! Having worked to quite tight deadlines for some decent sized clients in both advertising and publishing in and around London, it's quite a refreshing change not to be working to the same kind of pressure. The pressure is purely on me now, to get a painting I'm happy with to present to you. I was originally trained as an illustrator, so it's just a case of going back to the 'before digital' good old days, with some good old-fashioned tools… …but at my own pace… …to a certain extent!

What do you love most about your job?

I just love trying to get the character in there. The more silly the face, the more I enjoy it. A tilt of the head, a toy in the mouth - these are the little things that do it for me. And some of the lovely clients and pets I've dealt with.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I had been in advertising for more years than I can remember doing digital illustrations. My first love (and training) was back in the days of traditional brush and paper or board. I was doing the odd commission, but the pandemic came along, killed advertising, then I made the big decision to do it full time.

Why should our clients choose you?

This is a difficult one, because there are lots of very good animal illustrators out there.
I'm not the best, I'm not the worst, but I do think I capture your little furry/scaly/slimy/feathery fella (or girly) quite well, and I charge a reasonable price.
There are a lot of cheaper offers out there, but quite often you look into things and they're your photographs run through a filter and printed out.
That isn't me.
All of my work is hand painted in acrylics, oils or sometimes a mixture of the two, on a high quality art board (if you'd like it framed) or a box canvas which you can hang 'as is'.

The process is also quite simple:
1. You send me pictures of your pet, tell me what sort of size you're thinking, I give a price (price guide on website)
2. I do a digital trace and send to you for approval
3. Once approved, I ask for a non-refundable 25% deposit, which basically covers materials and the bit of time I've already spent
4. I paint
5. Final picture sent to you for approval
6. You pay and it gets delivered: as simple as that

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

The only part of the process I carry out online is to put a quick computer trace together for you to see, se we can agree the positioning of the subject before I start. That if you wish, I can send a progress picture at the end of each day so you can see it coming along (including the "OMG, what have I done? Can this bloke actually paint?" stage, which 95% of paintings go through)

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

No changes from me - I hardly ever see light of day, near mind people!
