Vocal Mechanics Coaching by Amanda Jeanne Busch

I am a vocal mechanics coach which is ever so slightly different than giving singing lessons. I ONLY COACH ONLINE, I do not do in person sessions anymore, but I find online to be even more intimate, actual, and factual, making it easier for me to do my job and for you to be more comfortable in your environment., as well as having your reflection staring back at you in the Zoom screen to monitor your own facial movements and adjustments to the information and instructions presented. I started doing private one-on-one sessions with amateur musicians in 2015 after Music Tech (The Rock and Roll College) in Minneapolis where I gave seminars and worked with students in the '90s, McNally Smith College of Music in Saint Paul where I gave my seminars and worked with students in the '00s, and Paisley Park recording studio in Chanhassan Minnesota where I worked with professionals heading into the recording studio or looking to take their live performance to the next level had all closed their doors. So most of my experience the past 30+ years has been working with college students and professionals, but in both 2022 and 2023 nearly half of my clientele has been age 14 and younger. I also had the opportunity to be Children's Choir Director at Robbinsdale United Church of Christ in Robbinsdale Minnesota with 2 choirs one of 3 year olds to 1st graders, and one choir of 2nd to 5th graders from 2008 until 2017. 2 car wrecks, 2 battles against cancer, and 4 strokes required a hiatus from my musical participation. I offer tangible results, instant gratification, and I guarantee at least a 30% increase in breath capacity after the first few sessions. Imagine the possibilities with all that extra air! I have real world experience and have helped clients meet their personal goals in nearly every genre imaginable, including but not limited to Country, Rock and Pop of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, up to current Top 40 Hits, K-Pop (Korean), Latino, Christian, New Age, Gospel, Musical Theater, Bollywood Hits, Hip Hop, Rap, Reggae, Hard Core, Industrial, Black Metal, Heavy Metal, Eclectic Electronica, Blues, R and B, Bluegrass, Folk music of many cultures including Irish, European, Roma, Sephardim Jew, Lebanese, Spanish, Hindustani, Oriental, and Classical in many languages including Latin, Italian, and German, and Madrigal performance groups. I also teach many stand-alone techniques including distortion, scream-fry, and mimicry. The summer of 2003 a local Minneapolis magazine reviewed my original music project at the time calling me The Midwest's Reigning Queen of Hardcore Music. Since the pandemic I no longer do one-on-one sessions in person, only online, but I'm no longer limited to the Minneapolis/Saint Paul Twin Cities Metro. I'm now able to coach clients at every age - 3 to 99 and at every stage of their musical journey, beginners to professional recording artists Nationwide! EVERYONE should have at least one one-hour consultation with a vocal coach before EVER entering the recording studio. Being here in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/Saint Paul) gave me the privilege to work with masterminds of entertainment such as Garrison Keillor, Bobby McFerrin, Cari Cole, Miriam Gerberg, Luanna Blake Mitchell, Kathy Salzman-Romey, Prince (Rogers Nelson), Paul Oakley, and even Mitch Miller himself! and all the hundreds of recording artists that streamed thru Paisley Park in the '90s and '00s. For beginners, inexperienced singers, children, and just about everybody I recommend starting with 30 minute sessions, unless you have an upcoming audition or performance with specific repertoire to prepare. New skills need time to sink in, and some build upon each other, so having a whole week off between sessions to practice produces the best results. But who am I to decide? Your booking is my honor to fulfill, and you know your own wants, needs, and deadlines, or your child's, and your wallet better than I do! I believe that as long as you are singing on the right PITCH there are dozens of different ways to sing the same thing. There are a handful of methods to actually physically teach how to isolate and manipulate the features of your face, neck, body, and breath to alter your sound, but paint the right picture for the mind and the body makes nearly indescernable adjustments, but you can very audibly hear the difference. I call these methods Tools for your Toolbox and in every session I try to add one or two more tools for you to utilize, some of the tools build off of each other so it's literally impossible to use all of the tools at the same time. They are Options NOT Rules for Singing, but once you decide you are ready to sing in front of other people YOU ARE THE ARTIST able to choose which tools to use when. My rates are $80 an hour, $60 for 45 minutes, or $40 for a 30 minute online session, and every 4th session is FREE! My friends in the industry keep trying to tell me nobody takes me seriously because I don't charge upwards of $120 an hour for private one-on-one sessions considering my credentials, but I just can't DO that to people! I charge $80 for one full hour, $6I0 for 45 minutes, or $40 for a 30 minute online session which is about the same price as everyone else everywhere. I am available to book sessions 8am till 8pm central time zone 7 days a week. Ask me about family discounts for more than one person scheduling back-to-back sessions. My rates working with duets is $120 an hour, ensembles of 3 or more people preparing to enter the recording studio or trying to take their live performance to the next level is $150 per hour prorated by 15 minute increments. My rate to give one-time presentations to choirs of any age or to theater casts is $250 for one hour, or $15 per people in the room if more than 16 people, but I am only available to do in-person presentations within 100 miles of the 7 county Minneapolis/Saint Paul Twin Cities Metro. I'm 48 years old and I literally grew up in this industry and have been a part of it my entire life. I'm new here on bark.com, but I've been on thumbtack.com since 2015 if you want to read a mile long leave-no-stone-unturned bio with references look me up there, but PLEASE hire me thru here, thumbtack is FREE for the client searching for services but they charge me thru the nose for every client who wants to ask me a question like - have you ever worked with beginners? - regardless of whether or not anyone actually schedules with me. Give me a chance and discover what you are actually capable of! Please tell your friends and family, your karaoke buddies, and your church choir about me! I get results! and I love what I do!

What do you love most about your job?

Instant gratification I love the look on someone's face when a new technique works out and they love the sound they just made!

What inspired you to start your own business?

I am recovering and rehabilitating from a handful of health complications including 4 strokes since 2016.

Why should our clients choose you?

I can help you find "your true voice" and dozens of different ways to manipulate it and push the limits proving exactly how beautiful, capable, and talented you truly are, or if there is a particular artist you want to emulate or mimic I'm pretty good at making that happen too.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

I only provide services online usually using the Zoom app, but Facebook Messenger, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Snapchat all work too or this old lady is always willing to try something new, anything as long as I can SEE and HEAR you. Except for single appearance work with choirs and multi person ensembles of any genre including rock bands in the Minneapolis/Saint Paul Twin Cities metro I am still willing to book in person. The summer of 2003 a local magazine did a big spread about my rock band at the time "Rhimshodt" (note to self: always pick a band name your fans can spell) calling me "The Midwest's Reigning Queen of Hardcore Music" so that's what I'm most known for close to home, or my previous project - an eclectic electronica covers medley fusion project called "Dreamcorps: The Army of the Dream. Making the soundtrack for when you're not awake" or my final project before motherhood took over in 2005 "Niobium: ancient tribal psychedelic metal" . My girls are now 16 and 17 and I'm starting to really gear back up into writing mode. 9 years ago my medical team ordered me not to sing ever again, and I've been singing as long as I've been breathing, and grew up onstage with my dad doing blues, country, rock, and bluegrass, lots of really deep tracks, and I was 8 years old the first time I sang for a band my dad wasn't in. My mom was a k-8 music teacher at a catholic school when I was little and she conducted the children's choir at our church and she made sure I was very classically trained. I started taking voice lessons in 7th grade paying for them with my own babysitting money. I never would have gotten a one on one education at today's prices, but I know my price is about the same as everyone else's. Singing has been my standard response my whole life - 3 out of 4 times if I have something to say and those words have ever been recorded and played on the radio, I'll answer your question with a song, but my spinal complications I've developed such severe anterior thoracic bone spurs, and I have a really bad case of fatty liver disease - a healthy liver is 3 1/2 pounds, the last time mine was measured on ultrasound it was estimated I have a 10 pound liver so it's pushing my right lung directly into those bone spurs. This past year I've decided to say I need to be able to express myself thru song again, promising myself to severely limit my volume and my breath support, and stay just above a whisper, not belting to my fullest capability as was my stage reputation built upon, drawing vast personal satisfaction passing on as many of my skills as possible to clients eager and hungry for them, dabbling in trying to make my sound worth sharing, it's commonly said "for every day you take off it takes 2 days to get back to where you were" and a few clients got very upset with me in session last spring because I was incapable/unwilling to demonstrate the technique I was trying to make evolve. I have never been satisfied with the quality and timbre of my own voice since I first had spinal rods put in in 1999. I am a staunch perfectionist especially when it comes to myself, but have tried turning positive reinforcement into an art form masking constructive criticism. I like being online even better than in person, I have my laptop directly in front of me on the piano so I'm not craning my posture for a good view of what you are doing mechanically as we warm up. I'm much more effective at doing my job up close and personal. I try to rise to the challenge each client presents to me, no matter what genre, in what language, or how soon they need it perfecto!

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

I no longer give sessions inside my home, now I only host sessions online, in part because I'm living like Rapunzel with my 70 year old mother

Amanda Jeanne is a no-nonsense, detail oriented, upbeat and positive person to work with. Very knowledgeable and presents things in a way easy to wrap your head around without confusing music theory mumbo-jumbo. I definitely recommend her!
