Spending time in your garden should be an enriching experience. But, if you’re short on time or simply can’t manage to look after your garden, it can soon feel like more of a chore rather than a pleasant environment to be in.

Never fear as with some clever tips, you can completely reimagine your garden space to make it low maintenance. This will mean more time spent enjoying your garden rather than looking after it!

Here’s our guide on designing a low maintenance garden to inspire you.

Advantages of a low maintenance garden

  • Great for busy lifestyles

  • Ideal for renters

  • Suitable for elderly or less able

  • More time spent enjoying the space

  • Often easier to design and install

Use paving

Any paved areas will not require weeding or mowing, which is great news if you don’t have the time, energy or inclination to do this.

Instead of adding a small patio, if you extend it to cover most if not all of the garden, then this will drastically reduce the amount of maintenance your garden needs, except for an occasional power wash.

Low maintenance paving options include slabs whether they be concrete or stone. As a general rule, the harder the material the less maintenance it will require. Look for something that is also UV resistant, and can be treated (if applicable) so that it remains algae free.

You can create a dining area on top of paving or even add a fire pit. Equally, paving creates a level surface for any children’s play equipment to sit on top of safely too. This makes paving an all-round winner.

Fake foliage

The likes of flowers, hedges and grass might look nice, but create an awful lot of work especially in the summertime. If you don’t maintain such features, your garden can easily become overgrown to the point it looks more of an eyesore rather than a place to relax in.

A fuss-free solution is to use artificial hedging, plants, hanging baskets or turf. All of which will drastically cut any gardening time. An added benefit is that artificial plants flower all year round, seeing as they aren’t real!

Opt for a wall over fencing

Walls are more expensive to build but will last for decades longer than a fence. The problem with wooden fences, in particular, is that they need regular treatment and painting. In bad weather, fences can easily be uprooted too.

But if you build a wall instead, not only will it look the part, but it will never blow down, rot or fade as a fence will. It’s also easier to add security features to a wall than a fence.

To sum up

Ultimately, a low maintenance garden is about creating as little work as possible in terms of any upkeep. Achieving this goal is all about careful planning, including thinking about the layout, materials and features you install.

By following the above tips, you’ll be well on your way to a hassle-free garden that you can enjoy without having to worry about putting in a load of work. After all, gardens are designed for relaxing in!
