When to book wedding musicians

Contact wedding musicians when:

  • You've confirmed your wedding date and venue

  • You want live music for your ceremony, reception or evening party

  • You're planning your wedding entertainment six to twelve months ahead

  • You have a specific musical style or genre in mind

  • You need a band that can perform your first dance song

  • Your venue requires professional musicians with public liability insurance

Popular wedding dates book quickly, so contact musicians early to secure your preferred acts.

How to choose the right wedding musicians

When comparing wedding bands and musicians, watch performance videos to hear their sound and see their stage presence. Check they have experience performing at weddings and ask about their setlist, equipment and space requirements.

Discuss your musical preferences, any special song requests and whether they can perform during different parts of the day. Read reviews from couples who've hired them to gauge reliability and professionalism.

Bark lets you explore local wedding musicians so you can find performers who match your style and create the atmosphere you're after.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does wedding band hire cost?

Bark's research shows wedding bands typically cost between £500 and £2,500, depending on band size, experience and performance length. Solo singers or acoustic duos cost £300 to £800, whilst premium party bands can exceed £3,000.

String quartets typically cost £400 to £1,200 for ceremony music. Most bands include equipment and travel within their fees, though distant venues may incur additional charges.

When should I book my wedding band?

Book twelve to eighteen months ahead for popular dates like summer Saturdays. Many sought-after wedding bands get booked a year or more in advance, especially for peak season weddings.

If you're planning a wedding within six months, availability becomes limited. Weekday weddings and winter dates offer more flexibility with three to six months notice.

What should I ask when booking wedding musicians?

Ask about their standard setlist and whether they learn special requests or first dance songs. Confirm what equipment they provide, space requirements and setup time needed.

Check if their fee includes breaks with background music, how many sets they perform and whether they're happy to accommodate requests on the night. Verify they hold public liability insurance and ask about their cancellation policy.

James Wood Musician

Hi there! It's James here - and thanks so much for checking out my listing. In short, I'm a singer and pianist here to fulfill your musical needs, whether they be upbeat, romantic or relaxed. I've got a wide vocal range and extensive repertoire to fit any occasion. I'm based in East Yorkshire/Northern Lincolnshire but happy to travel to you. See the attached videos for a look at what I do, but if you want an in-depth explanation, carry on reading below! It's hard to get across what you do in a few words and a 2-minute promo video, but I'll do my best to explain what it is I do, and why it's perfect for your event! It's easy to see a piano and think that I'll just be playing Mozart - which is not really my niche. I'm a pop pianist, which means I'm singing all your classic covers (from the 1950s to the present day) but accompanied by a piano rather than an acoustic guitar. Think Elton John or Billy Joel - but covering a whole range of tunes! Sometimes you might not know what you're wanting in terms of your music. You just know you want music. And that's fine! I've performed at countless events over a professional career spanning nearly 10 years. That means; weddings, parties, pub gigs, theatre shows, restaurants, festivals and a few other things I've probably forgotten - I've covered the works! That's given me an acute understanding of what people generally like and what sort of stuff gets people going. An understanding of the occasion is key to the occasion. Sometimes you know exactly what you want. That perfect first dance on your wedding day, or a specific list of tunes that's the soundtrack to your party. And that's great too, you can pick from my list of songs! If it's not on there, I'm happy to learn a few songs as well to make sure your event is just what you dreamed it would be. In other words, we'll work together to make sure you're happy you know what you're getting, and when you get it, you love it! So that's it, all you've got to do is get in touch, and if I'm available I'd love to be a part of whatever you've got planned!

What do you love most about your job?

My job is amazing - I get to go to work, perform lots of songs I love to play anyway and have a blast. Don't get me wrong - it's hard work, and that's perhaps a a slight simplification but that's the essence of what I do. Plus, I get to make people happy - who doesn't love making people happy?!

What inspired you to start your own business?

I've always wanted to be a performer ever since I was little. When I started out after graduating university it was a case of performing at open mics and gaining experience. After a while, it became a case of thinking of it as a vocation and with a business head on - along with gaining friends and contacts allowing me to play in more places. The more gigs you do - the more you get. My business has grown organically so there was no lightbulb moment as such, but I'm busier (and happier) than I've ever been doing a job I love.

Why should our clients choose you?

I would like to think it's because I'm good at what I do. Of course with music, personal taste and preference is always an important part of it but I don't believe I've ever left a customer disappointed. Not only that, I'll work with you. I'm only a phone-call or an email away if there's ever a problem and can normally deal with special requests where required.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Not really - I've done livestreams during covid but now that the world is up and running again I'm back to in person gigging - which is the way live music should be enjoyed!

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

N/A. My job is the same - I play songs and people listen. Thankfully there are no longer need for perspex screens or livestreaming - though I make a point of washing my hands plenty!

Nick was amazing! We are in the construction industry and wanted someone who would entertain us during out Christmas party on 18th December. We requested our prefered and non prefered genre of songs for Nick to sing and for us to ruin his great voice by singing karaoke.... Nick fitted right in and made the evening with his professional but fun and his accommodating attitude. I would 100% recommend Nick. Thank you Nick from all the team.
