Why do people hire a wedding car?

It’s not just self-indulgence to hire a wedding car. It can be extremely useful on the day, for several reasons! Many of these are functional, not just aesthetic. The main examples include:

  • Transport lots of people to the venue

  • Stop you ruining your makeup

  • Give shelter during bad weather

  • Make sure everyone arrives on time

  • Look amazing in photos

If you mess up with any of these scenarios, it can turn your special day into a disaster. Guests could be soaking wet, or important people might arrive late. You also won’t have the glitz and glamour you’ve always wanted at your wedding.

When you’re planning your wedding, there are a lot of cost factors to think about, so it’s important to know how much you can expect to pay to hire your wedding car. To give you a helping hand, we’ve put together the average amount you’ll pay based on the prices of local UK professionals:

There is a huge variation in price, which is down to the type of vehicle, hire time, your location, and the size of the party. However, the good news is that there are plenty of options if you are on a tight budget, especially if you are open-minded with regards to the vehicle type you wish to hire.

Types of wedding cars and their prices

You’ve got an endless list of cars to choose from when hiring your wedding car. If you’re prepared to budget for it, you can ride in the vehicle of your dreams – while also making your life much easier!

Data from UK government states that the most popular wedding cars are Rolls-Royces, Bentleys and Daimlers. Meanwhile, quirky options include a fire engine, bus, fire engine, golf buggy or black cab.

To hire a Rolls-Royce for your special day, it’ll cost £800 on average, while a Bentley is priced at around £600. A Daimler usually costs £500. And a vintage American car from the 1950s can go upwards of £1,000 if it’s particularly rare.

Surprisingly, another popular choice is a VW campervan, which costs £360 on average. An Aston Martin is priced at roughly £450, while a luxury limousine is approximately £600.

What changes the price of wedding car hire?

Your budget for wedding car hire will ideally be set in advance. It’s thus useful to know what contributes to the price. The main factors are:

  • Type of wedding car

  • Party size

  • Location

  • Date of wedding

  • Length of hire

  • Extra services

You can see a summary of each factor below. And don’t forget that some of these affect your price more than others.

Type of wedding car

Wedding cars come in various shapes and sizes, from vintage two-seaters to huge stretch limos. The vehicle type also needs to take into account whether it’s an older vehicle or a newer model.

If the car is imported (such as an American Cadillac), then the cost can soar to over £1,000 to hire the vehicle for the day. Older vehicles in general need a lot more care and maintenance, which is reflected in the cost of hiring one. Plus, retro vehicles are in higher demand because of the classic appeal they have for weddings. Newer vehicles are generally cheaper to hire unless they have been customised or have similar special features. It’s possible to find the likes of a Mercedes or Jaguar for around £150.

Keep in mind that the type of vehicle will have to align with the number of seats you require. Though it’s of course possible to mix and match vehicle types to keep the cost down too.

Starting on the cheaper end of the scale, a Mercedes is one of the least expensive cars to hire, averaging at around £200. The same goes for a Jaguar.

The most expensive wedding car type to hire is an American car, especially if it’s extremely rare or has been customised. These types of vehicles can cost upwards of £1,500 to hire, though in some areas of the UK, it can be as inexpensive as £300. As this vehicle type has the largest price fluctuation, it’s certainly worth shopping around if the budget is your top concern.

Party size

How many people require transport to your wedding is going to influence the cost the most. Given the average wedding car costs £400 to hire, it’s an expense that can soon spiral. Of course, some options can bring the cost down.

For example, you could have a wedding car for the bride and groom, and then use a minibus or larger transport vehicle for the rest of the wedding party. If you have a lot of bridesmaids and page boys and are on a budget, this would be far more affordable.

Keep in mind that even if the car is a 5 seater, with the driver, that’s already one less place. Most wedding car providers reduce the seating number to 3 to allow plenty of room in the back for the bride.

Location

If you require your wedding car provider to drive a long distance from where they’re based, then this will incur an additional cost. Some providers may even set a limit as to how far they’re willing to travel. This could also impact the cost if you live in a remote location, as you will need to choose a local provider which could be more expensive. Remember that prices for all wedding cars are almost always higher in the south-east of England, compared to rural parts of Wales or Scotland.

Date of wedding

Most people get married on a Saturday, and as the demand is at its highest then, so are the costs of hiring a wedding car. If you’re looking to save money, then getting married on a weekday will generally be cheaper for all services including hiring a wedding car.

The more notice you give to the car hire company, the less expensive it’s likely to be, too. They can meet all your needs without a great deal of stress or extra expenses. If you’re looking for a rare type of vehicle, it gives them more time to import it (if necessary) too.

Length of hire

Not all wedding car hire companies charge a flat rate. They often consider how long you want the vehicle for. If they price it by the hour, make sure you find out what the hourly rate is. For example, only hiring a car for half a day often allows the company to use that same car for another wedding in the morning/evening. Meanwhile, if you want it for several days, expect your price to skyrocket into the thousands.

Extra services

Not all car hire companies offer extra complementary services. You should thus double-check whether these are included. If not, and you think they’d be useful, get a price quotation. Alcohol in the car is a common service – such as champagne. This is often provided for around £30 extra.

A vehicle with the roof down tends to be more expensive. Keep in mind that this isn’t always as glamorous as it sounds, because it can ruin your hair, and thus make your photos less-than-ideal! These cars may cost up to £100 more.

Ribbons on your wedding car are inexpensive. Many businesses offer it for £25. And if you want complementary towels, this rarely costs more than £15. Free WiFi access is usually priced in the middle, at roughly £20. Some companies offer these smaller details free of charge – so make sure to check!

Ways to keep the price of wedding car hire down

Lots of wedding car hire companies charge based on the distance that needs to be driven, or the time you need the car. If you shorten both these things, it’ll push your price down. Pick a place to prepare that’s close to the venue. And don’t keep the car for the entire day if you don’t need to.

Some car hire businesses are more costly than others. You should thus get several different quotations to see which one works best. This ensures that you don’t pay more than you need to.

You could even ask a friend with an amazing car to borrow it for the day. They may give you a discounted rate. But there can be other difficulties involved with this, such as insurance, maintenance and cleanliness.

You could ask a friend or family member to drive the car, rather than a chauffeur. Or you may want to reconsider the type of car you’re going for. A quirky, novelty car can often be less expensive.

Pros and cons of hiring a wedding car

One of the main advantages is that it looks fabulous for your wedding photos. And you’ll also ensure that your make-up and dress always look beautiful. It can also be useful to avoid bad weather. And you’ll make sure that none of the most important people are late.

On the other hand, it can be very costly. When the rest of the day already costs so much, putting an extra few hundred pounds on top might seem unneeded. There’s always the possibility that the car will break down, even if it’s well-maintained. The risk is hopefully small, but it’s still there! And if you leave it too late, finding one that’s available can be a total nightmare.
