We are ‘mature’ ourselves and know that ‘to age’ does not mean ‘to stagnate’! Shine Personal Training delivers bespoke training and nutrition programmes specific to the more mature client – we say over 40s, but really it is for anyone who can see through the hype of ‘get fit/slim with just 20 minutes of exercise a day/ 3 days a week‘ promises. For some, exercising in a gym can be an unpleasant experience, particularly if you are surrounded by ‘young body-beautifuls’ who make their routines look easy. Gym personal trainers are often newly qualified guys or girls in their early 20s, with little knowledge or experience of working with the more mature client. Furthermore, they seem to think it’s alright to take your money and put you on a treadmill for 20 minutes – hardly value for money. At Shine, we take the time to find out about who you are and what you like. If you have exercise equipment at home such as free weights, TRX or home-gyms, we’ll incorporate them into your programme. If not, we’ll structure routines that focus on body-weight or suggest kit which will bring you the most benefit.

How do you help your clients achieve their fitness goals?

At Shine, I spend a good deal of time and effort getting to know our client's goals and their current situation (e.g. fitness level, time available to exercise, diet, etc.) and then design a programme that takes all of that into consideration. Above all, I look to build a programme that is fun and which a client will look forward to doing - that way, they are more likely to be disciplined in its completion and achieve their objectives.

What’s the secret to getting the body of your dreams?

We don't get the body we wish for, we get the body we work for!

Being disciplined in completing the exercise and diet regime is the key to success. In order to do that, you need to remain motivated and have a programme which changes as you develop more strength, stamina and flexibility.

At Shine, we believe that the key to achieving (an maintaining) your goals is tracking of exercise and diet and analysis of the data collected. Only then can you see what is working and what is not, amending the regime accordingly to ensure goals are met.

What do you love most about your job?

Seeing our clients achieve their goals and develop a routine which means that they don't fall back to previous levels. Above all, we like to see a smiling face - radiant with the positive feeling of achievement and proud of their progress.

What inspired you to start your own business?

As a more mature sportsman myself, I was frustrated to find that there were no personal trainers local to me who were of a similar age or who had an understanding of what 'customer service' is about. Having used several personal trainers in the past, none of them left me feeling that I was getting value for money.

My thinking was that if I was feeling this way, then there are probably many more people who want to achieve fitness-related targets who were as frustrated as me. So I designed my approach around what I would want to receive from an ideal personal trainer.
