What do you love most about your job?

Making a difference, however big or small, to the lives of young people in the UK and around the world, on a daily basis, makes for some motivation!

At our South London HQ, we operate with the same values that we encourage in our pupils - meet challenges with a smile and work hard to get the results we need.

We’re not a ‘school’ and we don’t act like one. We put tons of energy and personality into what we do - loving the days on the phone to parents just as much as recruiting new tutors and dishing out plentiful supplies of croissants at our monthly tutor breakfasts!

We're also very proud to have done our bit to ensure our pupils haven't been left behind during the pandemic - and we're excited for the future, continuing to see them go from strength to strength. :D

What inspired you to start your own business?

A decade ago, the world of private tutoring was very different.

The only way parents were likely to secure the services of an accomplished tutor was through a personal recommendation or by using a pre-established ‘agency’, usually a far more expensive option.

Neither of these avenues were open to all, nor did they offer the professional, forward-thinking standards that we felt a smart, modernised private education company could provide.

We started Minerva to make world class private tuition available to all, to help professionalise the industry, and to offer a level of service that we couldn't find anywhere else.

Why should our clients choose you?

Most of our tutors work with us full time, which makes an enormous difference.

It goes without saying that a Minerva tutor requires one of the UK government's new, advanced DBS checks - but they also have to pass our comprehensive (and friendly!) recruitment interview process.

Who do we look for? In our experience, a lot can be achieved by introducing a child to an inspirational "mentor"-style figure, a role model who is able to ignite their interests where others have hit a wall. But usually this isn’t enough. Tutors need to lead by example and must instil precision, creativity, critical-thinking, and exam savviness - all essential skills for growing up in today’s fast-changing world.

The ability to inspire confidence is also key - if unlocked, confidence can have a tremendous influence on a child's ability to create and improve.

So... with Minerva, you tutor will likely have an infectious, naturally-motivational personality and a proven, razor-sharp intellect.

We've also built our own reporting system called "Temple" to make the entire tutoring process more accountable. Want to know what's been covered? Parents can now read reports on their children's progress and see the progress we're making over time. Lesson reports are available online after every lesson, and access to Temple is included in our hourly fees.

"Sessions with Alice are going really well and Lucy is loving being challenged by the work. We're very happy. Also Temple is fabulous, the transparency is great. I'm not there for the sessions so it's really helpful for me to be able to see what's being covered." 11 Plus parent, 2020

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

100%. We went fully remote during the pandemic and it looks like it's largely here to stay. Prior to everything changing, we were already very experienced online tuition providers - so if it's online you're looking for, we've got it covered.

"Eyeopening and has gone extremely well!" Recent parent on the effectiveness of online homeschooling

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

While lots of our tutoring has moved online, we are resuming 'in person' tutoring when asked by parents. At the moment, our policy puts the decision in the hands of your tutor. If they are happy travelling to you, then so are we.
