Amina Khatib (PGCE) Professional Tutor

‘21 Certificate of Excellence

My teaching qualifications and experience: (BSc Hons, PGCE - Primary, PGDip-SENCo)  25 years in-school Teaching experience  4 years Tutoring experience including remote/online tutoring  KS1, KS2, 11+ Wandsworth Tests, Phonics check, SATs Preparation Professional development: STEM Ambassador, SENCo, Forest School Leader, Leuvens Scale practitioner My mission: As a Professional Tutor, I aim to provide students with the support they need to narrow the gap in their learning in English and Maths, as well as identify their strengths in order to help them achieve their potential. I also support students during transition between key stages as this can be a difficult jump for some. For those students within Wandsworth I provide support for the 11+ Wandsworth tests – Verbal and Non-verbal reasoning. My approach: My teaching method is based on proven methods and research in teaching and learning and I plan with reference to the National Curriculum document 2014. When teaching English I believe that closing the ‘vocabulary gap’ is an important academic tool for school success and to communicate with confidence. I pay particular attention on developing our students’ breadth and depth of vocabulary alongside the literacy targets. In Maths I aim to build fluency in maths and ‘number sense’ which is vital to achieving the targets within the Maths curriculum. I deliver lessons using 5 steps: Step 1: Review and refresh previous learning Step 2: Explain the lesson objectives and strategies to achieve them Step 3: Repetition, practice and application Step 4: Reflection and context of learning Step 5: Closing the gap and next steps My impact: I regularly assess my students in order to ensure progress, but more importantly I also seek to increase their understanding and confidence in the subject, as well as develop a positive attitude towards education and English and Maths. From the testimonials of parents and students, as well as the success in entrance exams and end of year exams, I feel I am having a positive impact on our student’s learning. Safeguarding: I have an up-to-date DBS checks and have registered on the update service. We have public liability insurance. My clients include: UK students and overseas students from China, South Korea, Russia, Poland, Singapore.

What do you love most about your job?

I knew from the age of 5 that I wanted to be a teacher and that's all I've ever wanted to do. I believe that education is the great leveller and holds the key to a successful future. I believe in good practice and excellence in everything I do.
I am a multi-skilled and experienced Teacher with over 20 years experience. My expertise is EYFS/Primary, but due to increasing requests I now also tutor KS1, KS2 and Year 7 students (face to face and online). I would describe myself as having an empathic and friendly manner which put children at ease immediately. I am well organised, punctual and want to see students achieve their potential. I have a thorough knowledge of the EYFS/Primary curriculum and the 7+ and 11+ entrance examinations. My approach is child led, ensuring lessons are engaging, age appropriate but effective, referring to curriculum targets to ensure coverage. I absolutely enjoy teaching including 1:1 and small groups.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I love teaching and tutoring seemed the most natural career path. In addition I have used my teaching skills to deliver Zumba classes locally and co-ordinate Coding and Robotics Workshops for children aged 8+ in Wandsworth and Lambeth with my husband. In addition, my experience and success in Early Years has led to my providing Specialist Early Years advice for local Childminders and Nurseries.

Why should our clients choose you?

Since I started tutoring, all parents have reported a significant positive impact on their children’s learning and progress. I prepare children for SATs and those looking to sit for independent school entrance exams (7+). Please visit my website; www.openscape.co.uk/testimonials to read testimonials from current parents. The testimonial below is from a student who we have been tutoring since January 2018:

“My daughter (Year 5) is being tutored in English and Maths and I feel the tutor is outstanding. My daughter’s confidence has increased and her teachers have remarked on how well she is doing. My daughter looks forward to the lessons and has developed a love of learning” – Mrs Reed

I ensure that students are properly assessed in the subject being taught, lessons are then planned accordingly and reviewed after each lesson to see impact. I believe in promoting best practice and all materials, resources and books we use support this. I have up-to-date DBS checks in place and am also on the update subscription service.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Since Lockdown I have successfully move all my tuition online with continued success for KS1, KS2 and KS3 students.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

All my sessions are now online, therefore there is no risk from Covid-19.
