Firstly, I have never sat for over an hour looking at a blank page to write a review! Reason being I don’t know where to start……but now I have! Stephen Carter - is a man who is currently saving my sons sanity! My son who didn’t want to be on this earth anymore, my 17yr old beautiful precious son wanted to walk down the train track when the train was coming and end his own life!!! I was broken! But more importantly - my son was deadly broken! I quit my job….called the doctor and spent hours looking for immediate professional private therapy for him, as the NHS wait list was up to 3 months!!! My son needed immediate urgent help and thank the lord above I came across Steve, I called and he discussed my sons problem with me and we arranged a first visit. We arrived the following week and was greeted and seated feeling very relaxed - I looked at my son and whispered ‘are you ok’ - he replied ‘yes Mom’ - we agreed I would sit in another room for him to be able to speak freely and privately. The hour session commenced.
An hour and 15 minutes passed and we left!…. My sons face and the words he said to me was every mothers wish! (That was after the first session!!!!) - needless to say I broke down with happy tears when we got home! My son has had 4 sessions with Steve to date and I can personally promise anyone - Steve is a wonderful person who is very knowledgeable, dedicated, understanding, professional and you really can talk to him about anything and everything feeling safe and in comfort. Steve created a personal tailored recovery plan for my son and no amount of medication or NHS service can compare to the positive impact that Steve has had on my sons mental health. I am now seeing a young man dealing with his problem with clever techniques, a positive mind, confidence and happiness within himself! Dr Lian Dimaro was the first psychologist I had ever been to and the thought of talking to a stranger about my issues made me extremely nervous. Lian put me as ease right away and allowed me to feel comfortable opening up about how I was feeling. Throughout our sessions Lian was easy to talk to, understanding and very patient. The unique and diverse nature of the people I meet. is definitely up there, but I would have to say helping support people to make changes in their lives is the most rewarding thing. When you see people making a shift in their lives, how they feel or how they respond to the world around them, it's incredibly moving and humbling.
While training to be a therapist I had experience through a number of voluntary organisations. I was already aware that counselling through the NHS meant long waiting times, but seeing the same long waiting times in other charity organisations (up to a year in some cases) was so disheartening. I imagined all those people who'd been brave enough to reach out for support and were left waiting. There is a greater need for counselling than there is available counsellors and that need inspired me to start up Compass Rose.
All of the research into what makes counselling effective shows the same result each time - the relationship you have with your therapist is the most important factor. That is why I offer a free consultation for you to come and meet me and get a feel for how it would be to work together. There's no obligation to continue with me after this if it doesn't feel right for you. So I guess the fact that you get to have an experience of counselling with me for free is a big plus, but I would also say that the warm, compassionate and non-judgemental service I offer is another very compelling reason.
