We've all experienced some sort out failure at some point in our lives. Whether it's breaking a healthy diet plan with a weekend binge or failing to follow through with applying for that job promotion, life is full of setbacks.

But what's important to remember is that these 'failures' aren't really failures at all, they are simply what makes us human. We all make mistakes, including the most successful people, but it's how you deal with them that matters. It's important that you don't let these hiccups consume you, but instead brush them off and focus on getting back on track. While that's easier said than done, here are a few tried and tested tips to help you get your life back on track after a bump in the road.

Figure out what caused you to fail.

It might seem strange, but the key to getting your life back on track after a setback is going back to the failure itself, and determining exactly what caused it. If you don't address why you failed or what led you to it, then you have a much greater chance of it happening again.

There could be a number of factors that contributed to it, including your emotional state, too much on your plate, or even relationship issues. The key is figuring out what actions led to the final event, and making a mental note to prevent these actions from occurring in the future. This will help you to move forward and get back on track with your life in a positive way.

Don't expect perfection

Growth is slow, and progress doesn't happen overnight. Getting your life back on track isn't a flick of the switch type event, it's a slow-burner that requires steady commitment and patience with yourself. As long as you're making progress, it doesn't matter whether it's messy or imperfect. Don't beat yourself up if you don't get everything perfect straight away. Instead, celebrate the small wins and the tiny moments of success and progress in everyday life. After all, small wins will ultimately lead to achieving big goals, so trust the process.

Go easy on yourself

There’s no denying that this has been a tough year for all of us. It’s important to be kind to yourself. Set some time aside each day for self-care, even if it’s only 10 minutes per day. Whether you choose to use that time to take a bath, meditate or simply sit and reflect, taking time for yourself will give you the space that you need to breathe.

Be aware of environmental factors

Sometimes, we may be extremely determined to get our lives back on track, but external factors get in the way. Your immediate environment has a huge impact on your mindset and subsequent actions. An environment that is aligned with your goals will help you to cultivate positive habits and stay on track, whereas an environment that conflicts with your goals will do the opposite.

Look forward, not back

While it can be useful to look back at a situation to analyse what went wrong in order to prevent it from happening again, focusing too much on the past can be damaging. It may cause you to feel stuck in a mindset of regret and sadness, whereas looking forward means giving your attention to your future. Looking forward and thinking about how you want your life to be will motivate you to get your life back on track, leaving the past in the past.
