I am an integrative therapist which simply means I use and combine a range of approaches to help people to make the changes that will take them from a place of being stuck and in emotional distress to a place of insight, understanding and positive change. By combining different approaches I have more tools to help unlock the problems that bring clients to therapy. The type of difficulties that I have helped clients with over the years include: Anxiety Depression PTSD Stress Issues around food and weight management Attachment issues Childhood abuse Childhood emotional neglect Self harm Domestic abuse Sexual violence Bereavement Counselling Identity Anger issues Relationships Fears and phobias Self -esteem Health anxiety Alcohol dependence Existential Crisis Overall my way of working is to look at a person as a whole and not be restricted by labels or being a slave to one psychotherapeutic approach. Being semi retired I view my work as a passion, something I choose to do and so I only ever work with a few clients at any one time and that means I can offer that bit extra in terms of time, commitment and follow up. I can also charge affordable fees which hopefully makes my services more accessible. A Little Bit About Me I have two adult sons. I live with my partner and a lively Cavapoo and still do some voluntary work in fields of mental health and drama for young people with additional needs. To relax I play sports and play in a small band. Qualifications in Psychotherapy, Counselling and Hypnotherapy My background is in education where I worked as a teacher, deputy head and trainer for 37 years. As part of that work I trained in adolescent counselling back in 1991 at Cambridge School of Education. I gained a certificate in counselling and used a mix of counselling and guidance in my work with young people until 2016. In 2007 I qualified as a counselling hypnotherapist having gained a diploma in counselling, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy and I am on General Hypnotherapy Register. At that point I started to work with people of all ages. The Therapeutic Relationship The different therapies usually on offer can feel confusing to those seeking therapy and yet many studies have shown that the most crucial ingredient in the effectiveness of any therapy is not so much the type of therapy being used but the relationship between therapist and client. My reviews show that clients have found me easy to get on with and passionate in support of them. Fees I know that the relationship between client and therapist is the single most important element in effective therapy and it is vital that clients feel confidence in the therapist they choose. That is why I advise clients to book an initial session at just £30 and then reflect to see if they wish to continue. I then normally charge £45 for a 50 minute session. Where hypnotherapy becomes a larger part of the sessions there may be additional costs to reflect preparation time but this will always be flagged. If you feel that my approach could help you please contact me by phone or e- mail and we can arrange a brief, free, no obligation chat.
To spend time with a client and to be allowed into their world for the purpose of helping him or her to improve some aspect of their life is both a huge privilege and a big responsibility. My whole working life has been spent trying to help people realise their potential and in so doing it has helped me grow as a person. My work has given me much satisfaction and is always a stimulating challenge. As a therapist I learn and grow with each person that I work with.
I retired from full time work as in education in 2016 and since then have done volunteer work for a local charity where I use my counselling skills. I also help with a charity based in Suffolk that offers arts based courses to young adults with special needs and emotional problems. What I have missed however is one to one work with people helping them to make changes in their life.
On a personal level I am told that I am easy to get on with and friendly. I am compassionate, calm and I have a good sense of humour. Professionally I understand the importance of confidentiality, improving my skills and knowledge and being a reliable, non-judgemental therapist. I will use a range of therapies that many other therapists cannot offer and I will always tailor my approach to fit the needs of my clients. For me therapy is not something “done” to clients. It is a partnership and a creative journey. I stick with my clients and I understand that I need to earn their trust and confidence. I have a lot of experience, particularly in support of younger people, and it is fantastic when I see people developing insights and then creating a better life for themselves. Most people have more internal resources that they realise and I see my role as helping people to tap into that and to discover, with my help, ways of overcoming the obstacles that are holding them back.
From March 2020, I started to conduct all my sessions remotely mainly using Skype video calling but I have also used FaceTime and even WhatsApp video calling depending on clients' preferences. This switch was necessitated by Covid restrictions but I have found that many clients now prefer remote therapy as it means they can avoid travel and feel comfortable in their own homes. The main negative with online is making sure that you have a private space for the sessions so that your confidentiality is assured. Face to face and walking therapy sessions can be arranged by negotiation.
With remote sessions there have not been any issues with Covid-19
