Karearea Counselling

Kia ora, my name is Glen, I live with my wife and two children in the Motueka river valley. I'm a fully qualified counsellor and have provisional registration with NZCCA. I'm passionate about providing a person-centred service that is available to all. I am passionate about Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS). IFS is a complete, cutting edge form of individual growth and therapy. It is unfailingly kind, compassionate and accepting, and is effective whatever our personal goal, whether it’s healing from trauma, dealing with everyday problems, or personal and spiritual growth. It also teaches us how to become our own inner healer, which is ultimately the only way that we can become whole. I have worked with anger management, depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, addiction, personality disorder, ADHD, and personal development. My practice is trauma informed and I have a compassionate/non judgemental approach. Karearea Counselling is willing to negotiate cost for services to help reduce any financial restrictions. The smallest amount of autonomy in your life can create a massive shift as you begin to trust yourself, I look forward to walking beside you on your journey.

What do you love most about your job?

There is a lot of joy in building relationships and this is an important part of what I do. Most of all, the moment when a client finds liberation from a symptom or problem, the light has been shown and the opportunity to gain their power back and take control of their lives may be possible.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I have been self employed for over twenty years in my other profession and it was a natural fit for me to start my counselling business. I also wanted to remove some restrictions for clients that could not be achieved working for an agency, like available times, price and online service.

Why should our clients choose you?

I pride myself on my ability to connect with people. I trust that my honesty and integrity will be transparent and reduce the time to build a trusting relationship. My life experience has connected me with many different people and I have gained understanding for many situations and behaviours allowing for a compassionate approach to my work with no prejudice.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

yes, encrypted online video sessions. This requires the client to have good internet connection and this can be an obstacle. The plus side is that the times are flexible and there is no travel, you also get to connect from the comfort of your own home or office. This can reduce the anxiety going into a new space.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

My focus since we went into the first of the lockdowns has been to improve my skills working remotely. I have carried out a literature review of the research on online counselling so I could fine tune my service. There is still a lot to learn as this is a new and growing area. My online service is the best I can offer my clients and I am making steps into contactless counselling for local people to meet in person.

Therapist FAQs

This will vary according to the level of experience and training that the therapist holds.

This will depend on where you live, what level of training your therapist has and what they specialise in (whether they are a counsellor, psychotherapist or psychologist) and also how many years of working experience they have.

Your professional therapist will be able to advise you on the full range of therapies available and will be able to help you select the best one to suit your needs. They will also be able to answer any questions you may have. Use Bark to get free quotes and find a trusted therapist today.

You need to devote some time to finding the right therapist as the connection you have with your therapist is essential. You need someone who you can trust, someone you feel comfortable talking to about difficult subjects and intimate secrets, someone who will be a partner in your recovery. Therapy will not be effective unless you have this bond, so take some time in the beginning to find the right person.

It is worth talking to a few potential therapists and asking questions. Therapists also have special areas of focus, such as depression or eating disorders. For some issues, such as trauma or PTSD, seeing a specialist is absolutely essential.

Everyone’s treatment is different. How long your therapy lasts depends on many factors.

You may be offered a single session of counselling, a short course of sessions over a few weeks or months or a longer course that lasts for several months or years.

It can take a number of sessions before you start to see progress but you should gradually start to feel better with the help and support of your trusted Bark therapist.

Professional counsellor training takes three to five years and can be a diploma or degree level. Qualification requires a minimum number of client hours acquired through a work placement.

You may also want to ask for testimonials of their recent work. You could also look at their profile page on Bark and Bark can show you reviews from past customers who have used their therapy.

Therapy has repeatedly and consistently helped patients with a whole host of issues. It can help with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or an eating disorder. Or it can help with an upsetting physical health condition such as infertility, a difficult life event such as a bereavement or a relationship breakdown. It can also be used to tackle difficult emotions such as low self-esteem, anger or sexual identity issues. Therapists also offer couples therapy. Therapists can also help with anxiety issues deriving from the coronavirus.

Absolutely! Many therapists offer sessions over the phone or through an online video chat platform, so you can have a session from the comfort of your own home - all you need is a strong internet connection and you're good to go.
