Dog & Puppy Training Classes

Obedience training for Puppies and Dogs

There are dog training groups, courses, classes and private lessons available across London. Many Londoners balance puppy or dog ownership with demanding jobs. So training a dog that can be left with dog-sitters, behaves for their dog walker and happily travels by train with them is a priority. It also makes weekends and holidays spent with their dogs away from the city far more enjoyable. After all, that’s why most people get a dog – for companionship and a furry friend to get outside in green spaces with.

What age should you start Puppy training classes?

It’s never too early to start puppy training classes - in fact, it should begin as soon as they come home, which is at around 8 weeks of age for most puppies to start basic obedience training . You can find a qualified and experienced dog trainer who specialises in puppy training classes on Bark.

When did you decide to become a Dog Trainer?

As an animal lover, I’ve always loved spending time with our family dogs and I knew that my dream job would involve animals. I first wanted to be a dog trainer after watching a documentary on training starring Cesar Millan when I was a teenager. I’d grown up with dogs and found Cesar so inspiring.

Which disciplines do you have experience with?

I have a lot of experience in obedience training and I occasionally bring my client’s dogs to my home in London for residential dog training. Some owners feel guilty sending their dog away to my ‘doggy boot camp’ but these intense training courses are great because I can ensure consistency throughout. Plus, I ensure they are highly enjoyable for the pups too. It’s the best option for both owner and dog in the long run. I’ve also recently taken a course in gun dog training which I really enjoyed so I’m looking to take on clients with gun dogs-to-be. My favourite discipline has to be agility – I’ve been taking part in competitions with my own two dogs since I was 18.

What is the most important aspect of Dog Training?

Definitely the same aspect that makes residential training so successful: consistency. Often clients come to me saying ‘I don’t know why he keeps doing this! How can I stop him?’ The reality is that unless your dog knows which behaviours make you cross, they have no reason to stop. Dogs want to be obedient to their masters but the only way we can teach them how to do so is through association. This is how a dog learns – they don’t understand exceptions. Rules like ‘you can go on this sofa but not this one’ or ‘you can come upstairs when my partner is away’ simply will not fly!
