Find psychodynamic psychotherapists near you

Psychodynamic psychotherapy focuses on understanding how past experiences, unconscious patterns and relationships influence present thoughts and behaviour. Bark helps you find qualified psychodynamic psychotherapists across the UK who offer a reflective, in-depth approach to therapy. Whether you’re seeking long-term support or exploring deeper emotional patterns, you can connect with professionals who work at your pace.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy often includes:

  • Regular one-to-one therapy sessions

  • Exploring thoughts, emotions and relationship patterns

  • Reflecting on past experiences and their impact

  • Building self-awareness and emotional insight

  • Long-term or open-ended therapeutic work

Sessions are usually held weekly and focus on creating a safe, confidential space for reflection and growth.

When psychodynamic psychotherapy may be helpful

You might consider psychodynamic therapy if you are:

  • Experiencing ongoing emotional difficulties

  • Struggling with relationship patterns or attachment issues

  • Dealing with anxiety, low mood or identity concerns

  • Wanting deeper self-understanding rather than short-term techniques

  • Interested in long-term therapeutic support

How to choose the right psychodynamic therapist

Look for therapists who are properly trained and registered with recognised UK professional bodies. Experience, approach, session frequency and comfort level all matter. Many therapists offer an initial consultation to help you decide whether the approach feels right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does psychodynamic psychotherapy cost in the UK?

Bark data suggests that private psychodynamic psychotherapy with a qualified therapist typically costs between £70 and £120+ per session, depending on experience, location and session frequency in the UK. Therapists in London often charge at the higher end of this range.

Lower-cost options are sometimes available, such as £25–£40 per session with trainee therapists or through organisations offering concessionary rates. Session fees and availability vary, so it’s best to discuss pricing directly with a therapist.

Is psychodynamic therapy available on the NHS?

Some forms of psychodynamic therapy are available through NHS talking therapy services, but access and session length can be limited. Many people choose private therapy for flexibility and continuity.

How long does psychodynamic therapy usually last?

Psychodynamic therapy is often medium- to long-term. Some people attend for several months, while others continue for a year or longer, depending on their goals.

Working with Vicky has been truly transformative for me. She has guided me in processing past traumas that were holding me back. Vicky is incredibly approachable, and I always feel genuinely heard and understood during our sessions. She offers fresh perspectives that have made a significant difference in my outlook. Honestly, my mental health has never been great, but with Vicky's support, I can confidently say that it's significantly improved.

I have had such a wonderful experience with Catherine. I saw Catherine for just over a year for multiple reasons, including OCD, work stress, and family illness. Catherine helped me so much through all these problems and I felt so comfortable sharing it all with her, with no fear of judgement. I have previously struggled to connect with therapists due to it feeling too robotic and emotionless, but Catherine is such a real and genuine person which helps so much with being able to open up. Appointments were easy to schedule and contact with Catherine in between sessions when needed was fast and helpful, no matter what day or time. Should I need any help again in the future I will not hesitate to get back in touch.
