Of course any job you enjoy is also hard work. It's the challenge I enjoy. Every student is different, and that's an interesting fact. But dedicated and personal attention is required to ensure their success. This means preparing the right tutor and matching the student well. That's essential groundwork, which is followed through by periodically overseeing the tuition, and continuing dialogue with the parent and the student concerning progress. What I love about the job is when we hear of an improvement in the grade and outlook of students. The cases where we can see very specifically how our work has transformed the student's achievements are the most motivating.
I graduated from Oxford University in 2006. That was hard work, especially as I completed my degree in 2 rather than 3 years. The main difference at Oxford compared to other Universities (this was my second degree so I could make a direct comparison even then) was the one to one tuition. It was this tuition that really enabled me to question and engage - a necessity in order to really grow academically. Since then I have tutored a wide range of subjects, and have often seen students improve two whole grades following tuition. One student after a relatively short period of instruction actually improved five grades. His mother even said to me, 'What have you done to him? He's completely different.' In some voluntary work I undertook I saw students go from hating a subject to loving it in quite a short space of time. However, in general the work I undertook was long term, day by day instruction. More recently I have seen my own daughter reach 2 years beyond her age in English, Maths and Science as a direct result of one to one tuition. I was and am inspired by the influence of one to one tuition. It has worked historically and continues to work today!
