‘20 Certificate of Excellence

Hello! My name is Avishan, I am an undergraduate physics student and I am extremely passionate about everything mathematics related. I have achieved A* and A grades in mathematics throughout GCSE and A-Level, and I am also a capable and enthusiastic teacher of KS3/GCSE/iGCSE Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). TEACHING EXPERIENCE: Prior to starting my physics degree at university, I worked as a teaching assistant/tutor at a secondary school during my gap year, and I am continuing tutoring whilst at university as I genuinely admire teaching maths, amongst other subjects and I love having the opportunity to show students how exciting learning can really be. During my time teaching at a school, in addition to teaching students on an individual basis, I took on the responsibility of teaching small classes myself, and I was also a mentor to a group of Year 11 pupils, having helped them with GCSE revision every week. TEACHING APPROACH: I usually tend to approach lessons by going through the background of the topic in focus and a few worked examples before giving students questions to answer themselves and going through worked solutions. Independent practice is a key part of becoming stronger in a subject, and the more a student practices, the better they will get, and this is a truly rewarding feeling. Throughout lessons, I work with a highly friendly, approachable and patient approach to tutoring, as it is vital to ensure that my students feel comfortable to ask questions on whatever topic they may have difficulties with. In addition, students should never be afraid to ask for further explanation if they do not understand a concept the first time around, as many concepts can be difficult to grasp initially and this is why it is so important to encourage students to ask questions whenever they feel like it. Furthermore, I aim to be as concise in my explanations as possible and I like to break down problems into manageable chunks. For example, I encourage students to underline keywords in questions and, particularly in maths and science, to draw diagrams to help them visualise problems. When it comes to exam technique I teach students precisely how to answer certain styles of question to score full marks and show as much working wherever possible. This is not only a very important skill to have to get good grades, but it will help them develop more of an understanding of the problems they are solving. *Prices: KS2 at £25, KS3/GCSE at £30 per hour* Please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss things further, such as availability, or if you have any questions!

What do you love most about your job?

Tutoring is a really rewarding job. It has enabled me to fulfil my passion for teaching whilst simultaneously changing the lives and outlooks of many students. It truly is gratifying to be able to motivate students and create a positive difference by helping them prepare for exams, working with them on class work they need guidance with, helping them improve in their subjects, and then seeing students succeed after all their hard work pays off.

What inspired you to start your own business?

During my gap year, I worked as a teaching assistant and tutor in the mathematics and SEN Departments of a secondary school, where I helped students from Year 7 to Year 11 in and outside of their maths lessons. I understand how daunting mathematics can be as a subject for many young people, so it was truly rewarding to be able to help students understand the beauty of mathematics and how important it is in other scientific and technological fields, and to inspire them to achieve the best they can in their studies and beyond. I always aimed to motivate students by reminding them that I once was in their position too, and that with diligence and hard work, anybody can do great in their studies. In addition to helping out in larger classes, I took on the responsibility of teaching a small Year 7 class their maths lessons on a few occasions. I also had the opportunity to take students out of their lessons to work with them individually, particularly students who were evidently struggling with their work, to ensure they had a clear understanding of the topic they were learning. This helped me develop my interpersonal skills, and it was truly fulfilling to be able to encourage them and see them become stronger mathematicians. Aside from classroom responsibilities, I was a mentor to 4 Year 11 pupils, having helped them with GCSE revision every week. I gave tips and guidance regarding organisation, reviewed mock exam results and discussed post-16 options with them. The amazing experience I had working at a school made me want to continue teaching and inspiring young people, so I decided to continue as a private tutor throughout my university studies and that is what I am still doing today.

Why should our clients choose you?

I'm an experienced, friendly and understanding tutor with an avid love for teaching and I always tailor my lessons to the individual student's needs. I pay thorough attention to areas where my students are less confident and aim to increase this confidence to 100% so they are ready to tackle any questions they may come across in future homework, tests or exams. I have a thorough knowledge of the specifications for various exam boards in maths and the sciences, and work hard with my students to ensure they understand absolutely everything in these so that they are in the best possible position when they get to their exams and know exactly what to expect. In addition, I make extensive use of past papers as practice for these exams and once my students have studied the course content in depth, I go through these papers with them one by one to help them understand how they should answer questions in order to score full marks.
