I am a consultant engineer with a First Class Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering. I am currently offering private Maths and Physics tuition up to A-Level or foundation degree level. In my sessions I will try and relate the subjects that we are covering to real world problems as much as possible rather than treating them as a purely academic exercise. I find that this makes mathematical problems much easier to understand and therefore remember. The sessions will begin as problem based learning, focusing on the topics currently/recently being covered in your classes. As you progress through the course we will start to move onto more exam based preparation, working on revision techniques, study aids and past exam papers. One to one tuition really can make the world of difference with subjects like Maths and Physics as it can be difficult to break over the initial knowledge barrier when trying to learn it with little support. Once broken through though people are often astounded at how easy they then find it; although there are always more topics to ponder over, the initial preconceptions of difficulty are gone making further breakthroughs much easier. I want to help as many people get to that stage as possible.
I have always loved teaching, and whilst I am not a teacher (Although it was something I seriously considered) I try and do as much of it as I can. I regularly run STEM activities in secondary schools, mentor students doing industry led projects in addition to the private tutoring.
STEM subjects have a lot of stigma attached to them of being too difficult and boring which puts alot of people off. I relish the opportunity to show people just how wonderful they really can be.
When I was at secondary school STEM subjects were not pushed at all, I didn't even know Engineering was a worthy career choice. This led me to have to take a protracted route into such a fantastic industry. Ever since I have taken every opportunity to show secondary school students that STEM subjects are worth doing and that careers in Maths, Physics and Engineering are worth doing.
As I am a full time Mechanical Engineer I can bring a slightly different aspect to your Maths and Physics studies. In my sessions I will try and base problems around real life applications of the theory, to give the subject life and purpose. I often do this by basing problems in my sessions on problems I face in my career which helps the subject to come alive, become memorable and ultimately aid in the learning progress.
I am not a teacher, although I almost was, but don't let this put you off. I only graduated in 2016 so can fully relate to the stresses of exams and can provide useful advice on revision techniques which will help to get you through it. I also need a solid understanding of all of the theories that you will be covering in your courses as most designs start life out as an equation on 'the back of an envelope', they aren't just designed on a computer.
