Sensory Sensibility

Hello my name is Nicola McDonald and I am the founder of Sensory Sensibility. Professionally I'm a Coach, Author, writer and candle maker and I combine these creative skills to compile coaching exercises with a sense of inner wellbeing. Getting yourself into a state of feeling calm and present is a wonderful place to be when working on your growth. I've been a qualified coach for a 3 years and, in Oct 2021, I opened Sensory Sensibility to offer my customers and clients a little something extra to support inner wellbeing and self-care. Scents make memories. Memories are Sensory. Senses stimulate Sensibility. It was pre-pandemic 2020 when I first began experimenting with candles. I had a lot of leftover wax from candles bought as gifts, so one day I decided to melt it down and make one bigger one with it. Before I knew it I was experimenting more, buying fragrance and essential oils learning about different wax types. And learning the right way to create a candle. It struck me that what I was doing was buying scents that transported me to a time and place. I'd recall stories of a time when... with the cold or hot throws of a scent. This is what takes place in coaching to an extent. We transport ourselves back to a time when we did, and we use that knowledge and strength to push ourselves forward. So a kitchen experiment grew to a business which is now online and compliments my coaching. I also make candles which are unscented as I'm aware that our sensory processing is different and some are equally mesmerised by a dancing flame and less by the throw of a scent. I wrote a coaching and wellbeing journal this year, which I picked up from the printer 14 March 2022, to provide an insight into coaching through exercises. This will change the face of my current coaching box online offering as I have consolidated all leaflets into one place. The website will be update soon. The journals also has short meditation exercises, a place for notes and observation and gratitude pages between the covers. You can do all of these exercises from the comfort of your home or in a place where you feel safe and creative. You can use it in our sessions if you choose to or simply buy a blank or lined journal and write or sketch your way to your goals. The journal I wrote, is intended as your toolbox to use when you need it. Sensory Sensibility was created to provide a warm hug through a range of coaching and wellbeing exercises with the calming compliment of scented or unscented candles. As a coach, I walk beside you to help you unlock your potential and navigate your way towards growth, courage, change, empowerment and love. I'm your helping hand. My background is in IT. I was an operator, programmer, analyst programmer and then IT Manager. When I was made redundant after the second time I chose to make a change prompted by the suffering I witnessed from 2 entity closures. In 5 years I've qualified as a Personal Development Coach/Life Coach, written 4 books, volunteered as a coach for asylum seekers retraining in IT and spent 12 months working for charity researching and documenting the history of ME/CFS and made candles. The one thing that keeps me vested as a coach is watching clients reach their potential, watching them take action towards a positive future. I can't imagine I'll ever become tired of that feeling.

What do you love most about your job?

Watching a person flourish. Seeing the shift in how a client comes to you for help and then watching them leave with the tools to take the next steps. Some have a wobble in between depending on the magnitude of what they're aspiring to, it's normal and ok. It becomes all the more satisfying when we part ways and they are on their way to a new healthier place.

I'm lucky that I also have returning clients and I love reminding them how far they have come and learning what grew from the seeds planted in a previous time. It's important you acknowledge your wins.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I had two very long redundancy periods each lasting 2.5 years. I and many others witnessed two long established companies close their doors for good. I handled this news my way. I had a mix of emotions, but remained professional, and spent time listening to many around me in shock and being an ear for those who needed to let off steam and voice worry and concern.

Within 3 days of the first redundancy/closure announcement I lost my mother suddenly. It became more relevant in my life than the news about the closure.

Life has a habit of putting events into perspective don't you think?

Many people within the entity I worked in, had known no other work than that which they did every day. Their future seemed scary, a new role somewhere seemed impossible to them and there was a lot of fear and negativity about what was happening; what was around the corner for them.

Many of them would share it with me.

When I was about to leave the first the entity, as the doors were almost bolted for good and the furniture and equipment moved, I was asked if I could take on the Management role in another, my predecessor had taken retirement. It took me a long time to say yes. Nevertheless I did. After all I was so comfortable in that role it was easier wasn't it?

In that autumn the process of closing this entity began again.

I had many feelings, but the main one was where is the care for the individuals. The second one was, perhaps I wasn't listening the first time. Maybe this is an opportunity.

So after 5 years in this environment I wanted to make a change. I made up my mind somewhere in the early days of the second closure to be part of the solution, to be effective rather than affected, so I became a coach with The Coaching Academy after completing my PPC Diploma. It turns out when I started training that I had always had the mindset to empower rather than micro manage. Me and it are a good fit.

In order to get me off the starting block, I got myself a coach. A coach who I connected with, who I could be me with. Speak frankly, spiritually. Speak my truth, my wildest dreams with. It was the best and smartest choice, because when I unpacked it all, and faced my blockages head on, I wasn't just grieving for my mother I was grieving for my loss of identity after 3 decades in IT. Once I began unpacking me that's when the magic began.

Taking control and acknowledging and accepting I have choices freed me up to become a coach, an author, a writer and a candle maker. Through working through the noise I managed to change old narrative around what I believed I can do over what I can actually do.

The first three changes, Coach, Writer and Author were in my plan. The candles came from curiosity, a hobby. Life is like that; brings beauty, brings challenges. In the same way it became a part of the puzzle piece to my coaching & wellbeing package, organically.

Life's not all planned all of the time. Because you only what you know. And starting from a place of knowing is fine. Working out your values and beliefs is a great way to see what drives you. Sometimes there is wonderment around the corner. But you have the choice to go with the flow or not to.

I learned to marry all of my passions to create a coaching and wellbeing package. The beauty about what I do is no two people I meet are the same, I learn from you not just visa versa. I get to see life from other perspectives.

With each client I have a sense of pride and a sense of joy when the person succeeds. That feeling for me is like skipping. It's utterly uplifting and satisfying to watch you fly and share in the sense of satisfaction you have at arriving at your goal by your own actions. You are accountable and because of this your confidence grows and your courage roars. And these serve you over and again when seeking out your next goal.

Why should our clients choose you?

I am an introvert by nature, I always lead with kindness and love. I have a gentle approach and I know that coaching works. In the past 5 years I've achieved: 1 x Coaching Qualification, 4 Books, Candle Maker and the opening of Sensory Sensibility. And I'm nothing special, I just used the tools. I always use the coaching tools to move forward. This is what my clients learn to do too and they bloom.
