How to choose the right translator

When comparing translators, confirm their qualifications and whether they're members of professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) or Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI).

Check if they specialise in your required language pair and subject matter, whether legal, medical or technical. For official documents, ensure they provide certified translation services accepted by authorities. Read client reviews and ask about turnaround times.

Bark lets you explore multiple translator profiles so you can find someone who matches your language needs and budget.

FAQs

How much do translation services cost in the UK?

Bark's research shows that translation costs typically range from £25 to £50 per hour depending on language pair and complexity. Document translation often costs £0.08 to £0.15 per word.

Certified translation for official documents like birth or marriage certificates usually costs £30 to £80 per document. Rare language pairs and technical or legal translation command higher rates of £40 to £100+ per hour.

What is a certified translation and when do I need it?

Certified translation is an officially recognised translation accompanied by a signed statement confirming accuracy, often required by government bodies, courts and immigration authorities.

You need certified translation for official documents like birth certificates, marriage certificates, academic qualifications and legal papers when applying for visas, citizenship or submitting documents to UK authorities. Standard translation suffices for general business or personal use.

How long does document translation take?

Turnaround times depend on document length, complexity and language pair. Simple documents of one to two pages typically take one to three working days. Longer documents or technical content may require one to two weeks.

Certified translation often takes three to five working days. Many translators offer urgent services with 24 to 48 hour turnaround for an additional fee. Your translator will confirm timelines when providing a quote.

What do you love most about your job?

I love teaching my native language to either children, teenagers or adults and providing them with high quality tuition depending what they need. I really like that tutoring allows me to create different resources and to adapt to different expectations. Currently, I am teaching French to bilingual French-British 6 years old, helping few Year 8 students to improve their French alongside school, preparaing Y11 students to pass their GCSE , training a French- British Y11 to pass her A-levels and doing conversation on A1 and C1 levels to different adults learners: this is a really wide range of levels and skills and that this variety that I love in my job.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I starting tutoring whilst I was still studying to pass my MAs in Teaching French Literature and Language as well as Teaching French as MFL. Once I graduated, I starting teaching but didn't like the big classes so much and was really missing the priviledge relationship that tutoring offers. So I deciding to go back to tutoring.

Why should our clients choose you?

I am highly qualified : native speaker with 2 MAs in Teaching French on different levels - Literature and as MFL- and I followed a PGCE course
and experienced : over 8 years of tutoring both groups, individuals and in company and for different levels from conversation to examination.

Really great initial contact and very professional approach. I chose MM because of great alignment for my business and a very customer friendly approach. Max understands my market already and knows that I am so busy at the moment so I think it will be a good working relationship and I am looking forward to starting.
