Marijke Roberts Counselling

I am a qualified and accredited psychotherapeutic counsellor. I have always worked with people, for years as a social worker. I then made the choice to retrain as a psychotherapeutic counsellor, and for the last few years I have been managing my own successful counselling practice. In counselling I use an integrative approach, which means that I use my knowledge and experience of different therapeutic approaches, such as Person Centred Counselling, Psychodynamic Therapy and Cognitive Therapies (CBT), to find a flexible approach that best meets the needs of my clients. I work with adults, young people and with couples. I offer short-term and long-term therapy. Short term therapy is often focused on learning skills to manage a specific problem. In long-term therapy I help clients to explore deeper, in order to help them increase their awareness of their core beliefs, and how these beliefs affect their perception of themselves, and the world around them. We then look at how these perceptions colour their thoughts and feelings, and how clients can change the beliefs that no longer serve them. With couples, I try to work on increasing their awareness and appreciation of each other’s differences and needs, so both partners can feel heard and understood, and feel safe to be real and vulnerable. A deeper understanding can often change partners’ perceptions of one another, and give a renewed chance to deeper connection and fulfillment. I am on an accredited register with the National Counselling Society, I have a comfortable private practice. Please contact me directly on my mobile number, by email on m•••••@••••.com, or through my website, if you have any further questions. I aim to respond within 24 hours.

What do you love most about your job?

I love working with people, and helping them recognize their beliefs and perspectives of themselves and their lives, and how this may have held them back from living a rich and fulfilling lifestyle. It is amazing to see the changes people can make, once they know they have the power and the skills to influence their lives in a positive way.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I experienced some life-changing events myself several years ago. These events helped me to change, and become more of who I really am. I realized that my job at the time as a social worker was not fulfilling my need for freedom, autonomy and authenticity. I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to change my career, and do something I really love doing.

Why should our clients choose you?

I have many years of experience in working with different people from all different backgrounds. I have a good understanding of what drives people to do the things they do, and think the things they think. Clients I have worked with have described that they find it easy to talk an open up to me, and I have had many positive outcomes with the adults, young people and couples I have worked with in counselling. On my website you can find several testimonials that confirm this.

Counselling FAQs

Your expert Counsellor will be able to advise you on the full range of services available and will be able to advise on what is most suitable. Use Bark to get free quotes and schedule an appointment today.

At your appointment, you will be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions with a trained Counsellor who will listen and support you without judging or criticising.
The therapist can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes and find your own solutions to problems. However, they will not usually give advice or tell you what to do. The Counsellor might sum up what they understand you have been saying so that they can help you to form a plan of action.

Counselling can take place in a number of ways. These include:

  • Face to face session

  • Group session

  • Phone session

  • Email session

  • Online through live chat services or video conferencing software

You may be offered a single session of Counselling, a short course of sessions over a few weeks or months or a longer course that lasts for several months or years.

It can take a number of sessions before you start to see progress but you should gradually start to feel better with the help and support of your Counsellor.

You can be confident that any of the Bark local Counsellors listed will give you a reliable and efficient service to help you feel better.

You could look for Counsellors that are accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) which means that they have met the PSA’s required professional standards to practise.

Before you choose a Counsellor, you could read testimonials and read details of the issues they can help with on their website.

You could also look at their profile page on Bark and check out reviews from past customers too.

Counselling can help with many issues. These include the following:

  • Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety or eating disorders.

  • Physical health conditions such as infertility.

  • Difficult life events such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown or work-related stress.

  • Dealing with difficult emotions such as low self-esteem or anger.

  • Sexual identity issues.

  • Divorce.

  • Redundancy and work issues.

  • Phobias and fears.

Absolutely! Many Counsellors provide their services remotely via an online video call or the telephone. Not only is it more convenient, but it's also the preferable option for many people who would feel more comfortable holding the session from the comfort of their own home.
