If it is an event: What are the key shots for the day (if it is the event for instance). How many people at the event, where is the location, does location allow flash photography. All these information are ironed out in the consultation.
If they want portraits then I will ask them how many people are getting photographed kids and adult numbers for instance. What sort of look do they like.. such as some clients may like the dark moody type of shots (so low key) or the natural documentary lifestyle type of photography or high key (white background ).
Questions for all scenarios: What is the end result that clients want. For instance.. what will you want to do with the photographs? For events capturing the day they might want all digitals on a disc, for weddings they might want an album and wall display mixed packages, so the project is planned around client's end goals.
I love it that I can do what I enjoy, what I am good at and call it a job.
