How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?

Your loft can be converted if you have a minimum of 2.4 meters head room from the top of the ceiling joists to the underside of your ridge board. We can confirm whether this is what you have available during our free survey.

Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?

It all starts with your free initial survey meeting. During this meeting we will discuss your requirements and whether they suit your local building regulations and the space available to you.
We will instruct a structural engineer and architect to draw up professional plans. These will be submitted to building control on your behalf.
Once this is is done the build can begin :
Materials are ordered and delivered and scaffolding will go up.
Week 1: Steel beams and fire regulation chicken wire to maintain half an hours fire resistance is fitted.
Floor structure work begins and fire resistant fiber glass insulation is laid before the floor boards go down.
Week 2: Fit any ridge beam steels and strengthen the roof. For dormer conversions the dormer is built. For velux conversions your velux windows are fitted.
Week 3: All external work to be completed including tiles or cladding to all vertical surfaces.
Week 4: Fascias, Gutters and A1 rated uPVC windows are installed including velux windows to a dormer conversion.
Week 5: All plumbing and electrics are installed and the conversion is insulated ready for plaster boarding.
Week 6: Plaster boarding to entire conversion and staircase fitted.
Week 7: Internal stud walls are built and the conversion is ready to be plastered.
Week 8: Second fix - this means all skirting boards, architraves and doors are fitted. This also includes fitting the bathroom if your conversion allows for this.

Your loft conversion will be signed off by building control in readiness for you to decorate and make your own! All rubbish is removed and scaffolding is taken down. Plus your dream loft conversion comes with a 10 year guarantee.

Converting your loft into liveable space is typically much more cost effective than building an extension, with prices starting from just £15,000 for a basic loft conversion. However, this depends on how complex the design is. A loft conversion can be as simple as a room in the roof, or it can involve adding dormer windows or even altering the roof. The more sophisticated the design is, the higher the cost will be.

According to research carried out by Nationwide Building Society, converting your loft can increase the value of your home by up to 20%. With the average price of a house in the UK currently standing at £235,000, a loft conversion could increase your home’s value by up to £47,000. Of course, this depends on the design of your loft conversion and the amount of extra space that you’re adding to your property.

Most loft conversions will take around 10 weeks to complete. However, this is dependent on the design of your loft conversion. How long it takes to convert your loft will depend on the type of loft conversion being done, the materials used, whether plumbing is required, the type of staircase being installed and how many windows are being added.
