I look for creative ways to help clients express the unsayable, unconscious aspects of their lives, to offer deeper insight into difficulties using a mixture of talking and non-verbal methods, dependent on their needs. Because my approach is a little different, I offer a free initial meeting so that people can get to know me and how I work. With over ten years of experience working with adults and children, I have trained extensively in the areas of trauma and attachment. When feeling stuck or distressed it can be hard to put things into words. My approach takes into consideration your whole self. My aim in therapy is for you to feel as comfortable as possible, so that you are free to explore and express without fear of judgement, without feeling you need to please or get it right. My aim is to help you to feel not only relief from your difficulties but to be happy and comfortable in your own skin, more confident in your relationships and your place in the world. In my sessions you will never be told what to do or what is good for you. I work on the basis that you are the expert and that together we can find what will work well for you to help you feel better. The most important aspect of the process is that you feel safe. I can offer sessions indoors, outdoors or online depending on what you need. I qualified with a Masters in Dramatherapy (distinction) in 2011 and I am registered with the Health Care Professions Council which means that I adhere to a strict code of professional conduct and am committed to continuous professional development and working within good practice guidelines. Dramatherapists are trained to a very high standard, it takes 6 years in total to train (3 years degree, one years work experience with a client group and two years to complete Masters). Coming to see a Dramatherapist does not mean that you will have to do drama or roleplay (unless you want to!). My approach is varied and I adapt to the client.
Every day is different, every person is different and needs a different approach and a different aspect of what I can offer. Really, what I enjoy is taking time to get to know someone, to see the world as they see it and then try and understand what I can offer that might lead to a shift towards them feeling happier and more whole. Who we are and how we are is never a static thing, we are all fascinating, even when we have lost the ability to see that in ourselves.
I have worked for years for charities and small companies as a therapist and have decided to also branch out into private practice, although I also do still work for a small charity.
I have over ten years experience, particularly with trauma and attachment but also with anxiety, depression and issues around self esteem. In a session with me, you will never be told what to do or what is good for you. You will be the absolute expert on yourself and together we will build a process that will lead to you feeling happier in your own skin, more certain of who you are and what you want and better able to understand and enjoy your relationships with others.
Since lockdown in March 2020 I have been able to offer sessions via Zoom. I would normally prefer to work face to face but I did complete training in working online following Covid and feel confident that I can offer my service this way. I would prefer to stick to Zoom because I am confident that this would be secure and private and it also has a few creative tools that lend themselves to the way that I usually work. If clients want to work online but feel worried about how to do this I can offer a free online session where we get set up and used to how it works before sessions start. Working online can also make sessions more accessible for those in remote locations across Cumbria. I will only offer sessions to children online under limited circumstances however.
We can work online or outdoors at my outdoor practice or in another confidential outdoor space (for instance I can offer sessions at the beach near Allonby or somewhere in the lakes where we can be at enough distance from others that confidentiality is not an issue).
