Marcus Perkins

Since 1987, I have worked in over 140 countries, photographing campaigns for non-governmental organisations, commercial clients, and government departments. My photographs have been published internationally and exhibited extensively, including in the UK and European Parliaments, The Hague, St Paul’s Cathedral, The World Bank in Washington, the Museum of Natural History in New York, and the Natural History Museum in London. So why am I using bark? After nearly 40 years of international work, I am choosing to work a little closer to home, focussing on less complex assignments and workshops in London and the UK. To find out more about my work, or to discuss photography for you or your organisation, please get in touch.

What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?

For my type of work, the secret to taking a good photograph is making sure that the photographer, the client and the person (or people) being photographed all understand the purpose and value of the photography. When those values are shared, the pictures almost always turn out well.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

What is the purpose of the photography and what is the client trying to achieve. For me, professional photography must have a genuine purpose or the assignment quickly turns into snapshot session that is a waste of your money.

What do you love most about your job?

Learning to understand a person, a community or a business in order to tell their story. There is nothing more satisfying than a client recognising the delivered material as being an authentic and engaging record of themselves, their community or business.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I left school struggling to write, so taking pictures became a lifeline, empowering me to communicate and work on my own terms. This led to a fascination with the often hidden struggles of others and to how to get the best out of them to deliver engaging and authentic material. It was this deep interest in people and their stories that opened my world as a professional photographer, and which has served me well over the past 39 years.

Why should our clients choose you?

Experience. Having worked in over 140 countries, I've dealth with almost every concievable challenge that a photographer can face. I genuinely understand what can and cannot be achieved within permitted budgets and available resources. Of course the use of AI changes many calculations, but clients will have to decide whether they wish the photography to be entirely authentic or an artifical construct.

So why am I using bark? After nearly 40 years of international work, I am choosing to work a little closer to home, focussing on less complex assignments in London and the UK.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

No, it is not possible for me to offer an effective service online or remotely - other than of course to discuss potential work and to deliver completed work.
