Q&As

For my type of people-focused photography, the secret to taking a great photograph is a shared belief that the project being worked on has genuine value. It's important that the photographer, the client and particularly the person or people being photographed understand the purpose of the photography and the value it brings. When everybody believes in what is trying to be achieved, the results are always good. Without that collaborative spirit, people-focused photography rarely works.

What is the true purpose of the photography, what is the client trying to achieve. For me, professional photography must have a genuine purpose or it's simply a series of snapshots that anybody can take - and for a lot less money.

I love to get under the skin (in a positive way) of a person, a family, a business or a community in order to tell their story. There is nothing better than a client recognising the delivered material as being an authentic and engaging body of work with a lasting value.

I left school struggling to write, so taking pictures became a lifeline, empowering me to communicate - and work - on my own terms. This led to a fascination with the often hidden struggles of others and a desire to make these challenges visible. It was this deep interest in people and their stories that opened my world as a professional photographer, and which has served me well over the past 25+ years.

I am deeply committed to my work and have a strong belief in the power of the still image to capture and convey the human spirit in a timeless way.

No, it is not possible to offer an effective service online or remotely - other than of course to discuss potential work, and to deliver completed work.

To be honest, it's been very difficult to offer any kind of meaningful service during the Covid-19 pandemic. So unless the work has been pandemic-related, I've not taken on the assignment. Hopefully this will change very soon.
