What is included in a gardening quote?

Typically, a quote from a local gardener will include the following essentials:

  • Labour and equipment: The professional's time and the use of their own specialized tools.

  • Travel: Transport to and from your property in Penrith.

  • Basic clean-up: Ensuring your outdoor space is tidy after the job is complete.

Potential extras may include materials (like plants or turf), disposal of garden waste, or recurring visits.

Practical considerations when hiring a gardener in Penrith

  • Experience & Qualifications: While formal qualifications aren't mandatory for basic upkeep, look for professionals with RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) qualifications for complex horticultural or design work.

  • Waste Carrier Licences: Verify if your professional holds a licence for disposing of garden waste. This is often an extra cost if not included in the basic rate.

  • Insurance: Confirm your professional has Public Liability Insurance to protect your property and ensure peace of mind.

Key questions to ask your gardener

  1. Do you have RHS qualifications or similar experience for this specific task?

  2. Does your quote include basic clean-up and travel to Penrith?

  3. Do you have a valid Waste Carrier Licence and Public Liability Insurance?

  4. Are materials like plants or seeds included in this estimate?

What do you love most about your job?

We get to do what we love every day. We want your garden to be part of your home a usable space that you love not just the ground attached to the house. When we see people fall back in love with their gardens and use the space it makes the hard work worth while.

What inspired you to start your own business?

In 2018 we found ourselves in the fortunate position that we could follow our chosen career paths wherever we wanted. Both keen fell walkers and general outdoor fanatics we relocated to the Penrith area of Cumbria and made it our home. Rachel qualified as a Paramedic whilst Darryl extended his skills and education into forestry as well as maintaining grounds on commercial land.

When Covid 19 arrived Rachel used gardening as a way to relax whilst working as a Paramedic, much to the amusement of the landlord when the front lawn got dug up and turned into a micro allotment. With this, we realized how fortunate we are to live in the countryside and how important outdoor space is for our mental health. Our gardens can enhance lives whether it's as growing space, a hobby or as an outdoor room for those sunny or soggy Great British BBQ's.

Being a proud eco warriors from an early age we decided to look into gardening processes and how to make them more sustainable and planet friendly and have researched, read and tried out all kids of the occasionally weird wonderful gardening hacks.

We decided to take the leap and set up The Sustainable Gardener (Cumbria)
