‘19 Certificate of Excellence

My approach, initially, is very much about listening to you, understanding how you perceive your world and the topics/issues you might bring. Each client is different and unique and so is the way I work. For instance, you might just need a space to talk things through and reflect on your options and direction or you might want to focus on solutions to help you with a particular topic/issue or you might wish to explore past experiences/traumas with creative interventions. I offer sessions with or without my Pet As Therapy (PAT) golden retriever. He is a calming, often soothing presence in the room and if you opt to meet him; please be prepared for an enthusiastic greeting. I work with adults of all ages and also with young people (14+). The most important thing I find is that our sessions feel right for you. You might get a glimpse of that on first meeting and then hopefully it may develop further on the following sessions. Part of the work I do is to help you to get in touch with what is right and important to you. Often we want a break from what is burdensome but we might be unsure what we could have/achieve instead. I find that clients are often surprised when they allow time and space to reflect and explore their own lives. An idea(s), solutions, direction, a renewed strength to enrich their lives is often found. I do work from a perspective that challenges, struggles, difficulties and trauma can also be perceived as an opportunity for change and growth. I would be honoured if you decide to undertake such exploration with me. I have over 10 years of experience and training in a therapeutic setting. I have formal qualifications in Integrative Counselling (Adv. Dip. BACP Accredited) and Creative Arts Therapy (Advanced Specialist Training Status with NCS). Oly, the golden retriever, is a fully insured and certified PAT dog.

What do you love most about your job?

I have my own private practice where I offer creative and dog assisted counselling. I bring much enthusiasm and my gentle curiosity in supporting clients to make the positive changes they would like in their lives. I love the work I do and the changes clients go through; it provides me with a sense of purpose and fulfilment and not surprisingly, I often come out of a session feeling uplifted and energised. I hope my clients do too.

What inspired you to start your own business?

As far back as I can remember I always had a special connection with animals. Dogs, cats, birds, lizards, ants, butterflies, I always felt safe and noticed by them. I believe it was partly due to my curiosity and enthusiasm towards them a mutual understanding and communication usually happened. Not surprisingly, when I grew up my passion turned into a career in biodiversity and wildlife management.

I travelled extensively and lived among giant tortoises and tame island birds. Along the way, my work turned more and more towards the concerns and challenges of local communities. I found myself supporting, advising and developing people’s skills as part of my role. And I loved it! My fascination with philosophy and psychology strengthened my knowledge and capacity to offer help. This extended to managing a large number of staff on a corporate position and developing with them their personal and professional plans.

I really empathised with people’s dilemmas and issues and it came naturally to me to promote their autonomy and encourage their interests and aspirations. At the same time and due to a particularly difficult personal challenge, I entered the world of therapy and I have never looked back since. My passion officially migrated from wildlife to human life. The easy, immediate connection I often experience with animals translated itself to my encounters with people with its added richness, complexity and depth.

I let go of my former career and retrained as an Integrative counsellor. I developed skills and experience working with adults recovering from substance misuse; young people and families with complex needs and supporting young adults return to work or education.
