The Curious Past

This obsession, and yes it is an obsession. Family history is both intriguing and revealing about our ancestors and myself. Besides a tendency to be obsessive about the subject, I call it passion, I can add to that, tenacity and a very curious nature – some may say nosey, I couldn’t possibly comment. I now have 34 years of family history research experience. It all started in 1987 when my husband's paternal Grandmother gave me some very old original certificates and my Mum gave me two decorative single-family tree documents by Moses Knighton, her Grandfather. I had no idea that these gifts would ignite a lifelong passion for my ancestors’ lives. On Ancestry, 437 public trees feature my 3x Great Grandfather, Jeremiah Knighton, born in 1760. So I have concluded that genealogy is in my maternal DNA.

What do you love most about your job?

I have always loved listening to people. All of my jobs have been customer focussed often involving networking. When I first started my genealogical journey it was only my own ancestors I went looking for. But I soon realised I got just as excited searching out other peoples family stories. Basically, I just find people fascinating, alive or dead.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I started first offering history talks with the odd commission researching families. Now the emphasis is changing to research. But I do love both.

Why should our clients choose you?

Because I have a passion (my family might say an obsession) with family histories. Our family members past and present make us who we are. I find it fascinating to look at families, the names they choose for their children, the jobs people do, where they live. Often our ancestors had difficult lives, and I truly believe that searching for them honours their memory.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Absolutely I can. Following the pandemic, I am now a dab hand with zoom. Love the ability to do research online too. Although sometimes a trip to a records office is necessary depending on the document. The final report will be posted but will also be provided as a word document.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Everything I offer can be accessed remotely, from meetings to history talks. In-person I am happy to comply with the rules of the organisation and the venue.
