We hired Danny for a renovation project to remove the wall between our lounge and kitchen, and we couldn't be happier with the results.
He did an outstanding job—quick, professional, and at a very reasonable price.
The work was completed faster than expected, with great attention to detail. We highly recommend Danny for any renovation work.
Thank you for a job well done!

Hi Mehdi, Thank you for your kind review. It was a pleasure to work for you.

I am absolutely delighted with the entire service. I was a little apprehensive at 1st having read a couple of negative reviews.
Danny gave me a list of recent work they had undertaken and everyone said they where great to work with. I concur.
I had a small side extension built first and then added on the rear extension and a lot of internal alterations.
All done to budget and payment plan. Jobs completed on time and communication was great. I will use them again for any future projects.

Danny and his team worked on the conversion of our 1 bed flat to a 2 bed which involved knocking down and rebuilding walls, refitting the kitchen and laying flooring. The price quoted was competitive, the work was started and completed on schedule and the quality of workmanship was high. They quickly resolved any issues and were flexible when we requested additional work outwith original scope of the project. We have used lots of different builders over the years and would have no hesitation in recommending Wood and Stone to others. They were a joy to work with! More...

Hi Jacqui, Thank you for the review. Other than the 3 flights of stairs it was a pleasure.

Awful, would not recommend. 6 week job took 7 months. Work was always rushed & finished to a very poor standard, dangerous at times; The wall radiator fell off the wall as it was not hung properly. The decking banister came loose.( 12 feet high)We have children and these were two near misses of serious harm to them & us. We got this extension done 2.5 years ago, the roof leaks, the gutters leak, the rendering was left unfinished, the drain pipes left so that water pours out all over the garden. I really wish we had done more research before hiring Danny, wood & stone to do our work. If you complain or attempt to resolve issues you are met with a barrage of defensive & aggressive emails, he takes no responsibility & blames the customer or he completely ignores you. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY OR WORK WITH DANNY BEATIE. More...

Hi Karen, I am sorry that after nearly 3 years you have decided to, leave a 1 star review. I was made aware of the radiator problem by yourself and it was securely fitted the next day. As for all your other comments I am not aware of any of the issues. I have looked back on all e mails and messages from you and cannot find any communication where you advised of these issues and asked for repairs. You had a 12 month guarantee and at no point contacted myself to carry out repairs. I note that the review is related to external work and wonder if it is coincidental that this is also after a massive storm. Are you sure the damage is not storm related.

Wood and Stone homes replaced a shed for me and I'm thrilled with the result. I appreciated getting an invoice with everything broken down and the workmen were really friendly. Their work was really high quality and my new shed is solid. I'd definitely use this company again. More...

Rear extension completed to a very high standard. There where logistical access problems but this did not deter the guys.
All completed pretty much on schedule and hassle free. I was given a detailed estimate and payment plan and it was followed through. I would happily recommend wood and stone for this type of work

I recently hired wood and stone for a garage conversion and building alterations, and I couldn't be happier with the results.
From start to finish, the process was smooth and efficient. The team was friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and attentive to my needs throughout the project.
The quality of workmanship was spot on. Not only did they meet my expectations, but they also exceeded them. Communication was good throughout the project, regular updates on progress and any changes that needed to be made. Any concerns or questions I had were addressed promptly and effectively. The project did run over for time but it was due to weather restrictions for the outside work.
Overall I couldn't be happier, especially with the quote as was very reasonable in comparison to others so allowed me to get more done within my budget , I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again for future projects.

Wood and stone completed my flat renovation in January 2024 and I was very happy with all of the work. New kitchen, bathroom, lots of joinery and electrical work.
On the rare occasion they could not make it I was informed the day before. All in all being my first renovation work I was very impressed and would gladly use again.

they were unreliable - didn't turn up till a week after they said. What was to be a week's work almost 6 months. I had to get a real joiner in to fix all the mistakes - worktops not fitting, holes in cupboards etc. I can't give zero stars but I would. DO NOT USE. More...

I gave a start date and informed you in plenty of time that we where running behind and that it would be best to start the following week. We undertook this work more than a year ago and all work was completed to the point of snagging. You where not happy with the fitting of one worktop and I agreed to replace it. Unfortunately as you are aware the joiner had a critical family matter to deal with and was going to be off work for at least 3 months. I could have arranged another joiner but instead left you with a balance of £ 500 to arrange the replacement. I am glad you managed this.

I wish I can give 0 stars. Daniel Battie (Danny). Be careful of this Cowboy builder, who is only after your money. He will send you invoices every Wednesday and want payment on Friday, regardless he worked only couple of days in that week.
Destroyed my house from inside and outside. Ran away, when council inspected and failed his construction. Took over 80% of the payment while work was less than 40%. So i decided to pay remainig 20% on job completion basis. He was forcing to pay him more while he was still completing the tasks, he already paid 100%. A complete careless person who will apply every shortcut and will save pennies by using extremely substandard parts, which will fail as soon as he leaves. Another things to wat h is that he will blame you for everything. So far we had 4 under floor burst pipes, flooding the whole floor and destroying insulations and the structure. Every job, he did was a complete bogus, sham and sub standard. I wish if pictures were allowed with the reviews. Bark should investigate should remove his profile. Left my house with every job half finished. Installed banned roof, Skylight window leaking, water pipes and heating pipes he laid, all are leaking. Had to uplift whole floors to deal with the mess he left behind. Electrical work so dangerous that wires are right under the plaster.
Wren were shocked to see the kitchen he fitted. They even took pictures and permission to show it to their team, how poorly he did it. I have to remove all the kitchen and now spending over 13k to sort the mess he left behind. He uses general labourers, to build walls, install kitchens, laying water pipes and even the gas pipes. He claims he got 30 year experience and laid o er 6000 kitchens, don't believe a single word. I have got pictures, if you wanna see them. I personally can put better job together. Dealing with him through legal route to claim £18k back he took and ran away, without completing or fixing any of the work. He will never accept any mistake and will instead blame you, your architect, your structural engineer, council inspector, kitchen providing company, in short in body involved. He destroyed my house so badly that I had to go on anti depressants, declared not fit for work, had panic attacks and end up getting support from Mentle health.
My solicitors will be in contact with bark shortly, to remove his profile for the wider interest and safety of the potential customers.

Haseeb, My terms clearly stated weekly payments for work undertaken that week, I send my payment requests, not invoices out on a Wednesday every week to every customer we are undertaking work for. I also as you are aware reduce this request if we have not met the expected targets or if I feel we are running behind. Therefor I never took your money and ran away. I terminated your contract on 5th February 2024 as the last payment you made to account was 22nd December 2023. We worked the whole month of January and despite handshakes and promises from yourself received zero payment. You pleaded with me to sit down and discuss and to keep on working. I then sent a detailed proposal of weekly work targets and payments. You refused this as you only wanted to pay the full balance on completion which was around 2-3 weeks away, this would have meant we worked for 2 months with no payment to account, I could not agree to this as you had already broken your word on payments. I gave you a detailed breakdown of work undertaken to payments made. It is 85% complete and 60% paid. You mention that substandard parts where fitted but fail to mention that you supplied all the bathroom, en suite, cloakroom, kitchen and utility goods, many of them second hand with many parts missing. The skylights where also supplied by yourself with no flashings. The warm roof that was on your architect plans was initially costed for and you wished for it to be removed as it was too expensive. You told me to fit the roof like the rest of the existing flat roof. From the first day the architect and engineer plans could not be fully undertaken as their measurements where wrong, I asked you on at least 5 occasions to get the architect out but this never happened. I accept that pipes came loose when being tested and there was water leakage under the floor, this was rectified immediately. The wire you talk about was due to you asking the electrician to move a socket without my knowledge after the wall had been plastered. As you are aware I only once met a building control officer and he passed the work undertaken at that point. The main reason that no area was fully completed was missing materials and non compatible goods supplied by yourself. An example being both shower rooms had different size trays to the enclosures provided by yourself.

I had a loft conversion done by Wood & Stone and found them to be very professional. The communications were great, Danny even contacted me on holiday which he did not need to do. Work came in on quote, and the only slight negative was that it took a bit longer than quoted. More...

Took eight weeks to finish a 3/4 day job . Despite being paid still can’t get anyone to look at the finished doors, which are marked.
Reply from Wood and stone homes
Hi Gordon, The job was completed pretty much on time with 95% of the work finished within 1 week. You then went on holiday. Your house was lockfast and secure and only required a small amount of render work to be completed.. The marked doors are for the supplier to sort and I have informed them. 1 star for a job undertaken in full and on budget ? Doors supplied, doors fitted , opening made, lintels fitted , plaster work completed, joinery work completed render 95 % complete ,skip supplied, waste removed and all on budget. I am sorry that the final bits over ran but as you are aware it was due to the renderer being on holiday after you returned from holiday. You stated that you paid me in full before completion, I never asked for payment in full and asked you to retain a small amount till the render patch was completed. I can also confirm that you had a small issue with one of the patio doors sticking, this was brought to my attention by your wife almost 1 year after the work was completed and despite your 1 star review, we carried out our guaranteed remedial work. All the best Danny

Danny from Wood and Stone Homes came at the agreed time and provided the best quote - to create a second bedroom and new bathroom and kitchen in a one-bedroom flat. The scheduled completion time slipped due to employee and other problems, but the work was finished to a good standard, and Danny kept us informed of issues throughout the project. I would recommend Wood and Stone Homes. More...

Thank you Martin, It was a bit awkward with you being in Devon and trying to do it by phone and e mail but we got there in the end. Hope you enjoy the flat when you move north.
Barbara
We really felt looked after by Danny and his team.
They put up a fairly complicated system of soundproofing a ceiling.
Danny checked out the system carefully and the price was slightly less than we anticipated.
The job was completed well.
The reason for 4 stars rather than 5 was that the job took longer than he had planned for. It being a kitchen we weren’t able to get back into the flat for another day.
We would use Wood and Stone again for any other works that need doing .

How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
In my consideration all garages are suitable for conversion. The question being what type of conversion you require and how many alterations are required to get it to building standard for a warranted approved conversion or is it an additional area for domestic use that in the future would not be considered as approved habitable space.
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
A typical garage conversion for a garage attached to the property would involve
1: Find the house floor level and lay an insulated floor to match the level. If you have enough space a joisted wooden floor would be the builders preferred option, if not an insulated concrete slab would have to be considered.
2. All external walls would have to be of a cavity wall construction with insulation.
The ceiling if out with the house e.g no room above would also have to be insulated.
3. a slap out ( breakthrough ) would be required for a new door way.
4. Pipework and electrical wiring would be required for additional sockets and radiator.
5. Matching brickwork and window would be required.
6. All finishings to match the existing house as close as possible.
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
The most dependant factor is the original truss design. Most older properties ( 50 years or more ) have an A frame truss layout which uses larger wooden trusses to create a more open floor area and in general a larger apex height. Most new houses are unsuitable for this as the truss layout is of a W shape and takes up far too much floor area. It is possible to undertake a loft conversion in a newer property but at a much higher cost.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
Loft conversions today are much more expensive to undertake than in the past. the main factors are that to achieve a building standard loft conversion where the room/s can be described as rooms if selling in the future is that .
1. The existing floor joists will need to be doubled up with an additional joist, generally larger in size.
2. The insulation standards have increased massively.
3. If the house already has 2 floors it is pretty much certain that all the floors below will need fire doors and additional smoke detection.
4. A full sized staircase would have to be fitted.
5. It is the most obtrusive work that you can undertake in your home. Pretty much from day 1 till completion the builder is in and walking through your house.
I have undertaken hundreds of loft conversions but would always advise an extension if possible or move out for a good few weeks.
How long have you been in business?
My original business started in 1988 fitting kitchens. I got fed up of not being able to do my work due to waiting on others to undertake electrics, plumbing and general building work, as such I decided to find people who could.
I found an electrician who is still with us to this day, I found a plumber but have since replaced him around 15 years ago, I found a tiler who at 68 is still with us, I had a bricklayer to remove walls but now have my own guys to do it. Along the road I met many other tradesmen and have kept in touch and still use them to this day.
What guarantee does your work come with?
We give a standard 12 months guarantee on all work which starts on the day of completion no matter when the work was undertaken.
On larger projects e.g extensions we give a 10 year guarantee on all structural work.
In addition we have several manufacturers guarantees like 5 years on our window and door products and 20 years on our flat roofing products.
We can also arrange an insurance backed 10 year guarantee at an additional cost.
What do you love most about your job?
Mostly its different every day. Some days are challenging and some are very content. As a builder like most other builders you never know what it will throw at you and you have to find a way round it. It can rain for weeks when you are doing a roof, material might not show up, goods ordered can be late, people can be off ill and it has a knock on effect in planning, transport can break down. Or it can all go like clockwork. Its challenging but also very rewarding.
What inspired you to start your own business?
My Dad and his 5 brothers all from a working class background started their own business and from the age of 10 I worked with them during school holidays and weekends.
I pretty much knew I wanted to work for myself at an early age.
Why should our clients choose you?
It is the clients choice. I will give my professional advise, a realistic price and a guarantee that the job will be undertaken to the standards expected.
It is also a 2 way street, at the estimate you get a feeling. The customer considers can I work with this guy and I have to think can I work with these people.
At the end of the day its a feeling and trust.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
Possibly, But in all honesty I do not even know what this means.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
We work in our own area and keep the customer at a distance.
We also have an active covid plan in place should another lockdown occur whereby we will secure the premises and make it watertight until normal business can resume.
Our covid plan worked well as only 2 people caught it and it was not work related.
extension and renovation specialists
As a complete all trades specialist we can undertake most projects no matter the size.
We can accommodate a few general repairs for your home or an extension.
Our aim is to continue building our customer base.
1 small job can lead in the future to a much bigger project.
We learned this many years ago and have never forgotten it.
