Went in for Sunday lunch and was taken into the conservatory which was like a very cold grey bland box. When asked if we could go into the dining room we were told it was colder in there. We were served by a very sullen waitress who never spoke or smiled once. There was no atmosphere at all and the food was only lukewarm due to the room being cold Surely the 8 of us could have gone into a warm dining room and other people as well. My first visit for a quick snack at lunch and it was absolutely brilliant, one of the best burgers I have ever had 🥰 I assumed (wrongly) that it was only gourmet meals but there is also a lunch menu or just drinks if you prefer. Called in for lunch today. Fast efficient service from Kevin, who was very helpful and friendly. We sat in the conservatory. Hubby chose from the main menu, pan fried scallops with cauliflower sides followed by trout with Jersey royals peas and asparagus. I went for the lunch for less menu. Scampi then chicken chorizo and bean cassoulet. Cannot fault a thing. All served piping hot, presented nicely and delicious to eat. Background music was easy to listen to. Like the curate's egg, good in parts. The fish and chips was fine, although I'm not convinced by the chips, were they of the "double cooked" variety, I wonder? Steak and Guinness pie was mostly mushrooms, not mentioned on the menu, and which I hate. Mash was ok, but nothing special, despite the menu bigging it up. Worst dish was the cheese board, for which there was a surcharge. Tiny pieces of cheese end cuts, a bit sweaty too. Sorry, for this money I expected better. Cheese cake dessert with ice-cream was very nice. Despite not being busy, service was a bit slow and we were waiting to order for longer than expected. We did bring some of this to the attention of the manager (owner?) but he didn't convince me that he was that bothered. It's been 3 years since we've been here, and it will probably be another 3 before we try it again. We visited for the first time recently for lunch based on the good reviews we’ve read on Google and the AA review of excellence . The atmosphere and decor were great and the staff were all welcoming and attentive. However something went wrong in the kitchen that lunch time. I ordered soup with a poached egg followed by trout. The soup arrived with the ciabatta semi frozen and ice cold to the touch clearly recently defrosted but not warmed up to room temperature. I asked for the bread to be warmed up and they took my plate away return a few moments later. Upon eating my soup I realised they put the whole plate soup and all into the microwave as my soup arrived hotter, the bread was now defrosted and the poached egg now a boiled chewy lump. Not an enjoyable meal, feelings which were shared by customers sitting to our left and right who had the pork chop which they felt wasn’t tender as it could be.
