Our Oak Barn Homecare & Cleaning Story
Our beloved Dad, Enos, was a very hardworking man who carried his heart on his sleeve. He met our beautiful mom Irene in his early 20s, and they got married soon after. They married young. They went on to have 7 beautiful children. When our father was in his early 30’s, he started having minor strokes leading to major ones in his 40’s. Our father went on from being the main breadwinner (who was a head of HR in one the leading 5-star hotels + owning a couple of Fish and Chips shops) to being dependent on our mom for all his personal daily needs. It was painful. We were devastated. Not only did we had to adjust seeing our once independent “go-getter” father change into a former shell of himself, but we also lost our hero, too.

Despite receiving rehabilitation with the physiotherapist, he never regained his “old self” again. Sadly, he lost his dear life at the age of 54 (following pneumonia secondary to major stroke complications). It was devastating for all of us including our mother who was her main carer.

Following our father’s passing, we started reflecting on how things could have turned out. If only we could turn back time, we could have managed our father’s care differently. Our dearest mom would have benefited with respite care so that she can get some relief from looking after our beloved father. We were young and naïve. We were just mere student nurses who were carving out their life in their nursing journey.

The final nail to the coffin came about when we were treated “just like a number” (during Covid times) in our line of work as registered nurses and midwives by some nursing agencies and hospitals. We started questioning our purpose. We still wanted to give nursing care but in a different way. All we just wanted was to offer respite services to families who were going through the same experience as ourselves. It was our terrible experience from nursing agencies and hospitals combined with losing our beloved father that led us to create Oak Barn Homecare. We believe that if we treat our staff right, we will be able to deliver exceptional care to our clients (the same care that we would have wanted our father and mother to have).

Cleaning Services
We also added home cleaning services due to requests from our homecare clients who were fed up with professional cleaners doing a poor job and wanted to change them. All they wanted a good clean, so they didn't need to think about doing it themselves as they were totally drained. They wanted to make their lives easier, and their houses cleaned to a higher standard. Ever since then, it has become our mission to create a positive experience for our staff and our clients.

Why our cleaning services?
Our client that we used to provide homecare services (provided personal care and compression stockings for her legs) requested for deep cleaning services of her house. JR’s daughter lived more than an hour’s drive from her house and was not able to come and help her mom with her house cleaning. Here is what JR said to us:

“A professional cleaning service did a poor job, leaving my home not adequately cleaned, with noticeable dirt, dust, missed areas, or other issues. I am not happy with my current service provider because they have poor attention to detail, do not communicate and do not follow agreed cleaning task. I do not want my daughter to clean after them when she comes to see me”.

So we wanted to make a difference in her life.

Face to face
Online for counselling and emotional support too

We incorporated Personal Protective Equipment and engaged in staff training. We also promoted infection control to our service users and their families as well.
