Gives me great pleasure to recommend Robert and all his hard work in transforming my old 1960’s house into something that I can finally smile about. I guess my biggest lesson is: don’t bother trying to find 4 different trades, this clever chap can turn his hand to anything and make a brilliant job of all. Need doors hung? Robert can do this. Need laminate or herringbone floor done? Robert can do this. Need your kitchen tiled? Robert can do this. Need new skirtings to go with your new floor and have awkward radiator pipes? Robert is your man. Is your wall needing attention? This man can plaster too!! Do not go anywhere else! I wish him all the very best in his business and thank him for his great communication and actually turning up. Unlike most of my other trades 🙄. More...

Q&As

The vast majority of attached garages are suitable for conversion - the question is how easily they can be converted. does it already have a door to the house? is it insulated? it will probably need the floor level raised to tie in with the rest of the house, and maybe this makes the ceiling height too low? These are all factors that we can assess and design into your project.

most garage conversions can be done within permitted development rules, thus no planning permission is required. However, building warrants are required. For this, the first step is to have a survey and a set of plans drawn up - we can do this if required. These are then submitted to the council, and at this stage we would have a good indication of costs involved in the build and will present the customer with a quote. In actually getting the job done, the first thing is typically to insulate the floor and raise it to match existing levels, then either stud or batten off the external walls and insulate if not already insulated. The garage door would be removed and replaced normally with a window, possibly block, brick or frame and clad the area under the sill. first fix plumbing and electrics come next, this involves running cables and pipes to where sockets, switches and radiators etc will be. Then we plasterboard, plaster, and mist coat ready for decoration. Final fix joinery (Internal doors, skirtings, architrave, flooring etc), plumbing and electrical.

There are several factors influencing this - the obvious one is space and height. would the rooms end up being low and narrow? bear in mind that the roof needs insulated and the floor may need strengthened, so this will reduce that height even more. Then there's the type of truss - if you have attic trusses, a loft conversion is easy, if not, it can involve some extensive structural alterations. That's not to say it can't be done, just that it may not be cost effective. The other hurdle is where the staircase goes. in some cases you'll loose a room downstairs to add one upstairs. These are all considerations we can help guide you through.

Assuming all the planning work is done, structural engineers report is done and warrant drawings are approved - the first thing is to 'trim out' the structure. This is adding timbers around staircase openings, windows etc, and beefing up the trusses as required. Then the timbers that are in the way will be removed. Next up would be fitting the staircase and windows, insulating the roof, first fix electrics & plumbing, flooring, plasterboard, any internal partitions, door linings, plaster, 2nd fix joinery and decoration.

Floyd design & Build Ltd is a new company formed between myself (Robert) and my dad (Brian). We have both got decades of experience with other companies prior to teaming up and working together.

All our work is guaranteed defect free for 2 years

I love a challenge. Every day is different and every project brings new challenges. I think i would get a bit bored if i was fitting windows all day every day, or laying blocks, or plastering. But when we do large projects i get to do it all, then tell my wife every time i drive past 'i built that'. Sometimes it's a small job that takes me an hour but means a great deal more to the customer to have it done. It's a rewarding job.

I felt that i could do it better. I'm not trying to sound big headed - and i'm not going to prance around saying i'm the best there is, but i'll try to be. Unfortunately these days all you have to do to be a successful tradesman is turn up on time and do the job to a half decent standard. I don't think that's how it should be. We are aiming to give our customers excellent customer service, clear proposals, clear plans, clear contracts, clear expectations, and manage the project from start to finish so that we are the responsible party, and our customer can kick back and relax.

This is a difficult question for me to answer - I'm not going to list a load of marketing nonsense about how we're simply the best and use a load of overused words like 'luxury' and 'superior'. Our work tells the story, our customers would be better people to ask.

We will try our absolute best to ensure our customers have a great experience working with us. No building project should be stressful for the customer - that's my job. I'll bring you solutions, not problems.

We can provide architectural and design services remotely

We can cater to vulnerable people on a case by case basis.

Services

I've put these four services together because they are all one and the same thing. Increasing habitable space within a house in the most cost effective way possible is often a combination of the above. We can help with design and planning work all the way through to completion.

We've fitted kitchens from £5k to £100k and everything in between. Whether you want to revamp your galley kitchen or install a bespoke high quality German kitchen with all the bells and whistles, we can get it done.

We've fitted more bathrooms in the past two years than anything else we've done. I'm not sure why, i think it's just been a chain of recommendations. Regardless, we've got pretty good at it now! All budget levels - from wetwall shower cubicles to fully tiled and tanked wet rooms with porcelain, travertine or marble, wet or dry underfloor heating, shower jets, jacuzzi baths etc. We've done it all.

Our typical level of groundworks includes digging out footings for a new build or and extension, but having the equipment allows us to go a little further when required. examples of this are grading landscapes and driveways, altering levels and building retaining walls to create better space etc.

This would include things like windows and doors, staircases, skirtings and facings/architraves etc

aside from complete re-roofs in tile or slate, this can include repairs, adding Velux windows, lead work, gutters and downpipe replacements, soffits an fascias etc
