By and large we had a positive experience. (Our job Summer house 6x8) This wasn't our cheapest quote by any means, however CHQ was referred to me from a family member whose work i had seen and been rather impressed with. Project manager Adam quoted the work take 8 weeks approximately. However, it wasnt finished until 12 weeks. This was due unforseen planninng issues around the depth of the foundation, due to a large Conifer tree i hadn't factored in. This equated to us digging almost double depth that we had anticipated. This is where i was concerned the cost would spiral. However, im gald to say they didnt take advantage of the situation and to their credit the charge was considerably under what i expecting. Anyways, the finish was very good, communication excellent. The cost did exceed what i was expecting. But that was because i decided to add some other work( Always best to agree this first) as they do have other Jobs scheduled. That said they accommodated all my requests. I would definitely recommend and would use them again (When i can afford to that is) 5 stars for a 5 star service. Thanks! More...

Q&As

There are several factors to consider when determining if a garage is suitable for conversion:

1. Size: The garage should be large enough to comfortably accommodate the intended use of the space, whether it be a new room, office, gym, or other living space.

2. Structural integrity: Make sure the garage is structurally sound and not in need of major repairs or reinforcements before converting it. Check for any cracks, water damage, or other signs of deterioration.

3. Insulation: Consider the insulation levels of the garage. Proper insulation is important for regulating temperature and energy efficiency in the converted space.

4. Plumbing and electrical access: Determine if the garage has access to plumbing and electrical connections needed for the intended use of the space. This may require additional work and costs to install or relocate these utilities.

5. Permits and regulations: Check with local building codes and regulations to ensure that converting the garage is allowed in your area. You may need to obtain permits and adhere to specific guidelines for the conversion process.

6. Natural light and ventilation: Consider the availability of windows, doors, and ventilation options in the garage to ensure the converted space will have adequate natural light and airflow.

7. Accessibility: Evaluate the layout of the garage and any potential barriers to accessibility, such as stairs or narrow doorways, that may need to be addressed for the conversion to be suitable for your needs.

Overall, it is important to thoroughly assess these factors and consult with professionals, such as contractors or architects, to determine if your garage is suitable for conversion and to plan the process accordingly.

1. Planning and design: The first stage of a garage conversion involves planning and designing the new space. This includes determining the layout, deciding on the purpose of the new room (e.g. home office, bedroom, playroom), and obtaining any necessary permits from local authorities.

2. Clearing out the garage: The next step is to clear out the garage of any items or clutter. This may involve selling, donating, or disposing of unwanted items, as well as relocating any items that will be kept.

3. Insulation and waterproofing: Insulating and waterproofing the garage is essential to ensure the new room is comfortable and protected from the elements. This may involve adding insulation to the walls, ceiling, and floor, as well as sealing any cracks or gaps.

4. Electrical and plumbing work: If the new room will require electrical outlets, lighting, or plumbing fixtures, this stage involves installing or updating the necessary wiring and plumbing connections.

5. Flooring and walls: The next step is to install new flooring and walls. This may involve laying carpet, hardwood flooring, or tiles, as well as painting or wallpapering the walls.

6. Finishing touches: Once the basic construction work is complete, the final stage of the garage conversion involves adding finishing touches such as trim, molding, and furnishings. This may include installing cabinets, shelving, and furniture to make the space functional and inviting.

7. Inspection and approval: Finally, the converted garage will need to be inspected by a building inspector to ensure it meets all necessary safety and building code requirements. Once approved, the new room can be officially used and enjoyed.

There are a few key factors to consider when determining if a loft is suitable for conversion:

1. Height of the loft: The height of the loft space is one of the most important criteria for a successful conversion. The minimum height requirement for a loft conversion is typically around 2.2 meters. This measurement should be taken from the highest point of the ceiling to the bottom of the ridge board (the horizontal beam at the apex of the roof).

2. Roof structure: The type of roof structure can also impact the feasibility of a loft conversion. A traditional pitched roof with ample space for insulation and headroom is generally more suitable for conversion compared to a flat roof or truss roof, which may require more extensive structural modifications.

3. Access: Consider how easy it is to access the loft space. A staircase will need to be installed, and there should be enough room to accommodate a safe and code-compliant staircase design.

4. Structural stability: Before proceeding with a loft conversion, it's crucial to have a structural survey conducted to assess the condition of the existing roof structure. Any necessary reinforcement or modifications may need to be made to ensure the loft can support the added weight of the new living space.

5. Planning regulations: Check with your local planning authority to determine if there are any restrictions or regulations that may impact your ability to convert your loft. Some properties located in conservation areas or listed buildings may have stricter guidelines for loft conversions.

6. Natural light and ventilation: Consider the availability of natural light and ventilation in the loft space. Adding roof windows or skylights can enhance the ambiance of the converted loft and improve the overall livability of the space.

7. Budget and timeline: Finally, consider your budget and timeline for the loft conversion project. Converting a loft can be a significant investment, so it's important to factor in costs for design, construction, and any necessary permits or approvals.

If you're unsure if your loft is suitable for conversion, it's recommended to consult with a professional architect or contractor who can assess the space and provide expert guidance on the feasibility and logistics of the project.

1. Initial consultation and survey: The first stage of a loft conversion involves an initial consultation with a designer or architect to discuss your requirements, budget, and feasibility of the project. A survey of the loft space will be conducted to assess its suitability for conversion.

2. Planning and design: Once the initial consultation and survey are completed, the next stage is to develop a detailed design plan for the loft conversion. This includes creating architectural drawings, determining the layout of the new space, and selecting materials and finishes.

3. Obtain necessary permits: Depending on the scope of the loft conversion and local regulations, permits and approvals may be required from the local planning authority. This stage involves submitting the necessary documentation and obtaining the relevant permits before construction can begin.

4. Structural work: The construction process begins with structural work, which may involve reinforcing the existing roof structure, installing new floor joists, and creating openings for stairs and windows. Any necessary electrical and plumbing work will also be carried out at this stage.

5. Insulation and waterproofing: Insulating the loft space is essential to make it energy-efficient and comfortable. Insulation will be added to the walls, roof, and floor, and waterproofing measures will be taken to protect the space from moisture and humidity.

6. Flooring and walls: Once the structural work is complete, the next step is to install the flooring and walls in the loft. This may involve laying down new floorboards, drywalling the walls, and finishing with paint or wallpaper.

7. Windows and skylights: Installing windows, skylights, or roof lights in the loft is crucial for natural light and ventilation. These features will be carefully positioned to maximize daylight and airflow in the new space.

8. Staircase installation: A staircase will need to be installed to provide safe access to the loft. The design and layout of the staircase will be determined based on the available space and building regulations.

9. Finishing touches: The final stage of the loft conversion process involves adding finishing touches such as trim, molding, and fixtures. This may include installing built-in storage, shelving, lighting, and other decorative elements to personalize the space.

10. Inspection and approval: Before the loft conversion can be officially completed, a final inspection will be conducted to ensure that all work meets building codes and regulations. Once approved, you can start enjoying your new and improved living space.
