What's not to like? This place is so laid-back, even in the winter it's worth going. People here seem to live so back in the 1940s with no worries in the world white picket fences just love the place.

Not for those looking fast pace, clubs, shopping or modern children’s entertainment. Come here to walk the many and varied paths through countryside, cycle the cycle ways, and if you are lucky with the weather there are different types of beaches to visit. The old Victorian sea fronts have not all been well maintained since the number of visitors declined when flights became cheaper than a ferry, so not all hotels remained open, many fell into disrepair and so Sandown particularly has a lovely beach but a run down esplanade. Remember this is the UK - seaweed will follow a storm, the council does not clean or rake the beaches any more, empty the bins too infrequently in the summer and have no money to maintain public toilets etc Dogs cannot be walked on the beach (May to September I think) and the water is cold! Please take you nappies and litter home, pick up your dog’s mess and you’ll be welcomed! More...

Good place to visit with the family. It seems a lot of people miss out on this scenic area in England, which is commutable from London. Isle of Wight has great views and food. More...

Many years ago (1960's) I used to live, as a child, in the flats next to Parkhurst prison. My father worked in Parkhurst prison. I remember there was an old hand pump out the back and that the stairway was painted yellow. I remember the paint because in the summer the walls would attract many crane flies (daddy long legs). Does anyone have any photos of these flats and know when they were demolished? I also remember going into Albany prison in about 1967 and seeing a model of the prison in a hall. I think this was to do with the opening of Albany. Does anyone know what happened to the model or even, did anyone else visit and see this model? More...

The Isle of Wight is a charming destination that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a relaxed atmosphere. Located just off the southern coast of England, this island is a haven for those seeking a peaceful escape from city life. The ferry ride to the Isle of Wight itself is enjoyable, offering stunning views of the coastline and the sea. Once on the island, visitors are greeted by scenic landscapes, with rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, and beautiful beaches. Places like Shanklin and Ventnor boast sandy shores and picturesque promenades, perfect for a day by the sea. For nature lovers, the Isle of Wight is home to several walking trails, including the famous Needles Landmark, which provides breathtaking views of the chalk cliffs and the surrounding waters. The island is also steeped in history, with sites such as Osborne House, the former home of Queen Victoria, offering a glimpse into Britain’s royal past. Carisbrooke Castle and the Dinosaur Isle Museum are other notable attractions that appeal to both history buffs and families alike. The local cuisine, especially the fresh seafood, is a treat, and the island’s quaint villages, such as Godshill, provide a wonderful backdrop for leisurely strolls and exploration. The pace of life here is slower, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. Overall, the Isle of Wight is a delightful retreat that offers something for everyone, whether you're looking for outdoor adventures, historical discoveries, or simply a serene getaway. More...
