Hear from
a professional

What do you love most about your job?

I started in 1998 and became a full-time professional in 1999 after spending a number of years as a tutor/assessor for a training company (where I also achieved my D32 units as a registered assessor).

The simplest way to say why I love my job is to put yourself in my position. Yes many people say they like helping people, but the transformations can be quite incredible. Plus some have stayed in touch years after helping them, especially my sporting clients.

When the original lockdown hit the UK in late March 2020, I then had 4 months of not being able to see clients one to one. Yes, I was offering online/remote/phone hypnotherapy, and even though I have offered this type of hypnotherapy for over 15 years before (I used to call it multi-media hypnotherapy) with clients around the world, in particular for those in remote locations in Australia, the fact that I could not work one to one really did make it hit home how much I missed my work. Fortunately at the time of writing I can see people one to one again.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I used to be shy and immensely skinny. There were other issues in my life too many to mention, and there is no need to get the violins out now..so let us just say that.

However, for some reason, everyone since I was in primary school onwards, would come to me for advice and help, and I just seemed to have a talent to solve/help other peoples problems, and I must admit, I am bemused sometimes how I can do it. Anyway, immense long story short, and after several subtle hints from others, I decided that hypnotherapy was the most effective tool to complement helping others, and to pursue it as a career.

It has not been easy. If you, or anyone you know, is trying to run a self-employed business, then you know you are not promised anything, but, if you offered me my old job back, and even though I did enjoy it, and got excellent feedback, and I reckon by now I would be on over £60k a year with company car.....sorry.....no thanks.....been there done that.

Why should our clients choose you?

I don't put on an act. I am not a "push-button" therapist. I am me. I do not treat people like I am working a conveyor belt either. It is one of the main reasons why I do not have a online booking option for one to one appointments, because sometimes I can spend more time with an individual during a session, simply because you have to. Mind you, other times is because they just like to chat and I have the time to indulge.

Again, without getting the violins out, I know what it is like to struggle with things, and let us keep it at that. One thing I have tried to avoid is sounding like one of those "gurus" where their world it is always sunny, everyone is meditating in grass field with blue skies, and no blemishes etc. Life is not like that....and I will call a spade a spade, but I do have a sense of humour...and believe me...that can be a life saver sometimes.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

Short answer is yes, and I used to call it multi-media hypnotherapy. For most, all you need is a phone. We can also do video, but really it is something we can both decide on in advance.

There are some unique advantages to multi-media hypnotherapy, and in no particular order, here are some:

1) Available everywhere, as long as you have some form of communication device, even if it is just a basic mobile phone.

2) You don't have to travel anywhere. Indeed you can be in your home, in any room, wear what you want, sit down, lie down...could even have a "bad hair day", and not concern yourself with travelling etc.

3) Ideal for those who are shy or overly anxious

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Here are the basics of my Covid-19 policy:

1.1 Also, if you have been abroad within the last 14 days or have come into contact with high risk individuals within the last 7 days, you agree to contact Scott Burke prior to attending any booking.

7. Covid 19 contact tracing confidentiality: please be aware that I may be asked to release name and contact details of anyone they have been in contact with for more than 15 minutes, as it would be with all who are contacted via “contact and trace”.

8. If you feel you might need a drink, please take any water or equivalent with you.

9. If you feel you need to use the toilet, then where possible, please do so before arrival.
