PenLife Associates Ltd

We are a Chartered Financial Planning firm based in York and have been established since 1984. We believe that successful financial planning is measured by our clients’ ability to achieve their life goals, through our expertise, guidance, and realistic forecasting. Investment performance is important, of course. However, looking at your money as the vehicle for a beautiful life, rather than focusing on figures alone, is what makes our approach to financial planning so effective. We start by getting to know your aspirations, anxieties, and everything in between – then work out a plan to help you achieve your goals, and reduce any stress you feel. You focus on your path, and let us concentrate on your financial plan and forecasting that can help you walk along it. Our service can only be as strong as the people who deliver it. Here at PenLife, we have a team of Financial Planners, Administrators, Client Care and Receptionists who have the skills and experience to deliver exceptional client outcomes - so you can expect nothing less than our very best. You may be at a particular milestone in life, or simply need guidance about a certain issue. No matter the problem you face, we’ve got the know-how to help you find the right solution. As our client, you’ll enjoy dedicated support from financial professionals who specialise in making the complex simple.

What do you love most about your job?

That’s easy: the people. I enjoy working with a great team at PenLife as well as meeting new clients. But best of all is having clients who’ve been with me for years; it’s a privilege to go through the highs and lows of life with them.
Deb Jacobs, Chartered Financial Planner

The thing I love most about my job is helping clients create plans to achieve their goals. I really enjoy taking the time to get to know clients and understand what they want out of life.
Kriss Brining, Financial Planner

Building ongoing relationships with our clients to help them achieve their financial goals and objectives.
Haydn Wishart, Financial Planner

Helping clients achieve their objectives, especially around retirement. The majority of people want to retire on their terms, and they spend a substantial part of their lives working. So being able to tell a client they can retire is an amazing feeling!
Adam Dent, Chartered Financial Planner

Seeing the difference you make to clients’ lives, building new relationships, and working with great people.
James Wadsworth, Chartered Financial Planner

What inspired you to start your own business?

Established in 1984, PenLife Associates has grown to be one of the most respected financial planning organisations in the Yorkshire region. In 2007, three employees bought out PenLife from the existing owner. From that point on, their vision shaped PenLife and transformed it into the business it is today . Under their leadership, the business grew from a team of 9 to over 25. They ensured that PenLife’s ethos of putting the client at the heart of absolutely everything was engrained in the team, right from the off. In 2009, PenLife became one of the first financial planning practices in the region to achieve ‘Corporate Chartered Financial Planner’ status.

In 2021, PenLife became employee owned under an Employee Ownership Trust, made up of Directors: Deb Jacobs, Tom Hughes, Nina Wright and Bernadette Render. PenLife continues under the same path and the same culture, proposition and processes. With even more emphasis on being a team and working together.

Why should our clients choose you?

If you’ve ever worked with a Financial Planner before, you might feel anxious that making a change now could cost you dearly. If you’ve never previously taken financial advice, you might be unclear on how things work. Spend a little time with us, and you’ll soon breathe a sigh of relief.

Ask any of the hundreds of clients we’ve helped over the years, and they’ll tell you they feel better informed and more in control after speaking to us.

Here's what some clients think of PenLife:

I have been a customer of PenLife for several years and have benefited from investment planning, retirement planning and now post-retirement financial management for over 4 years. Being able to retire at 55 was a huge bonus, and this was planned in tandem with advice as to how best to invest funds for the eventual maximum inheritance of funds for my wife and/or children, which is a huge source of comfort for me. I have been happy to recommend PenLife to several friends and family members which amply demonstrates my satisfaction with the service I continue to receive.

Always friendly, great communication and genuinely interested in helping to meet our financial goals. The advice we have received has always been very sound and options have always been discussed with the pros and cons debated. We can be sure that the best decisions are being made on our behalf. Feel we can recommend PenLife and their advisers to our Friends.

I admit I was a little concerned at first when considering whether to place my trust with a financial planning company. To say that I should not have had any worries at all is a huge under-statement. From the moment I contacted PenLife Associates some 4 years ago, on the recommendation of a friend, I have had nothing but complete confidence that my finances are in safe hands. Deborah Jacobs has been my Financial Advisor since day one. Deborah is not only very friendly, kind and approachable but she is extremely professional and hugely knowledgeable about financial/retirement planning. My regular meetings with Deborah are always a joy - no stuffiness, no jargon - just straight-forward, no-nonsense finance talk. I must also mention two other people in the PenLife team, firstly, Adam Dent, who is now an extremely capable Financial Planner; it has been wonderful to see Adam develop his career. Secondly, Nicola O’Mahon, Deborah’s dedicated Administrative support, who effortlessly manages to deal with all enquiries. Finally, not only do PenLife Associates support you with their financial expertise but they are hugely supportive of the local community with their charitable endeavours.

Asking me to explain how investments/money works is a bit like asking a dachshund to play the piano. I understand the number at the end of all the other numbers and can see whether it has got larger or smaller, which puts me ahead of the sausage dog. Just. I lament my lack of knowledge and financial nouse which, in my case can lead to fear and panic. However at, PenLife I've found a reassuring, relaxed and realistic approach to saving and financial planning. That is worth a lot to me. Honestly I wish I had sought their advice sooner. And the number at the end of all the other numbers? It's looking pretty good.

Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.

We don’t have a “catchment area”, so as long as you’re happy to work with us and we feel we’d be able to help you, we’d love to take you on as a client. We can absolutely provide services remotely, we offer meetings over Teams, Zoom or Skype for those who would prefer this.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?

Our clients have the option of having video meetings if they prefer not to come into the office. In addition, we have hand sanitiser stations throughout the building.
