Silver Linings Counselling ~ Susie Pearson

North Yorkshire

We have worked successfully with clients providing face-to-face, individual and couples counselling. We offer all our potential clients an initial 20 minute free confidential telephone consultation, during which we explore their personal issues and circumstances. We can discuss options and arrange an initial first face-to-face session. WHAT IS COUNSELLING? Counselling is a process that enables people to explore many aspects of their life and feelings, by talking openly and freely. The counsellor neither judges, nor offers advice. The counsellor gives the client an opportunity to express difficult feelings such as anger, resentment, guilt and fear in a confidential environment. The counsellor may encourage the client to examine parts of their lives that they have found difficult to face before. There may be some exploration of early childhood experiences in order to throw some light on why an individual reacts or responds in certain ways in given situations. This is often followed by considering ways in which the client may change such behaviours, and develop healthier patterns of behaviour going forward. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF COUNSELLING? Effective counselling reduces stress and confusion, allowing clients to make effective decisions leading to positive changes in their attitude and/or behaviour. Effective counselling is not advice-giving and is not acting on someone else’s behalf . The ultimate aim of counselling is to enable clients to make their own choices, reach their own decisions and to act upon them accordingly. Whilst counselling can be a stand alone therapy, many of our clients will benefit from accessing other resources and approaches to help them. A strong therapeutic relationship, is the building block by which change can start to occur. We will always make referrals if we feel clients may need the help, or support of other qualified professionals. All our work is to the highest standards in keeping with the ethical standards and codes of practice of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). All our services are kept confidential, and we respect that confidentiality is your right. Information revealed by you to your counsellor, will be kept strictly confidential. Any personal data retained by us is kept in accordance with the GDPR, 2018. WHAT ARE THE ISSUES COMMONLY ADDRESSED BY COUNSELLING? • Bereavement & Loss •Stress & PTSD •Relationship problems •Depression •Managing Anxiety and Panic Attacks •Self Esteem • Changing Habits & Behaviours •Alcohol Use Disorders •Addiction • Abuse • Caring for Others • Eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Managing Anger • Assertiveness •Irritable Bowel Syndrome • Phobias • Dealing with Fertility Issues •Sexual Health • Self-Care •Parenting After the initial face-to face session some clients request online sessions, which can be arranged on a case by case basis. We can also provide life and career coaching for clients, looking for a more skills based approach to enhancing their life situation or career progression. We take a more directional approach by creating a clear 'vision' for the future, and establishing a 'strategy' for getting clients where they want to be. We also provide counselling , executive coaching, mentoring and leadership skills training to supporting mental health at work, and combat unconscious bias, and develop 'resilience' amongst employees. Our experience has been gained working across various industries including the airline industry, investment banking, law firms and in HR consulting. Our Founder, Susie Pearson has worked in mental health and counselling in both the private and non-profit sectors. Susie successfully ran her consulting business in Hong Kong from 2008 - 2015, and did many hours of voluntary work amongst the Homeless, Asylum and Refugee community, before relocating back home to Yorkshire.

What do you love most about your job?

The best thing about my job is the people I meet. It is a privilege for me to able to share their journey, and listen to the ebbs and flows of their lives, regardless of whether I have my 'corporate hat' on or my 'counsellor hat'. People never fail to amaze me with their ability to be resilient, keep going and remain hopeful when faced with the difficult times in their lives or work challenges. Just being there, in the moment for others, is very rewarding. I love to learn, and always look at different ways of developing my skills, so I can be the best at what I do and challenge myself.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I was inspired to start Stranded Consulting in 2008, after completing a Masters Degree in Counselling with Monash University, whilst pregnant with twins. I was lucky enough to have one son, and took time away from the corporate world, to deal with infertility issues and to destress. I had been working for 16 years in the corporate world, and wanted to reach out to others who felt stuck, and needed help to get from one stepping stone in life to another. The name 'stranded' was inspired by a few things. My work counselling refugees and asylum seekers, dealing with infertility, and recognising how unique each and every one of us are. We all have a unique story to tell, and life can be hard. We aren't meant to be islands. Lifes' challenges can make us feel like we are stuck. However I also believe there is a positive in being stranded, as you must take stock of your life, re-set your internal compass. It takes courage to reach out. I also use stranded - in relation to DNA, to remind clients that we are all unique and we must strive to treat people as individuals and be respectful of, and celebrate our differences, and learn to work with people from all cultures and backgrounds. Incrementally change can happen, and we get to a happier place. My business became "Silver Linings" more recently.

Why should our clients choose you?

We believe clients should choose us because we have an abundance of empathy, patience and life experience which gives us great insight and instincts, to ensure you get the help you need for yourself, or a friend or relative. We work to the highest of standards as a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), The Psychologists Protection Society (PPS) which provides Personal Indemnity Insurance cover, advice and guidance for counsellors and therapists, and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

We are experienced in cognitive and behavioural techniques to help people cope with crucial issues in living, and use a range of techniques and tools. We arrange support and referrals when needed. The issues commonly encountered by clients we have worked with have included: anxiety, panic attacks, depression, alcohol misuse, sexual abuse, trauma, PTSD, self-control issues, anger management, work-place stress, marriage /relationship issues, parenting issues, domestic violence, grief and bereavement, fertility and infertility issues, sexual health and eating disorders. Whilst volunteering amongst the refugee and asylum seeking community in Hong Kong we helped clients cope with the impact of long-term detention, ‘Denied Refugee Status’ and living in ‘limbo’.

In the UK we set aside time to support small charities in the local area, who need pro-bono counselling services for their clients.
We value diversity in everything I do, and ensure our approach is inclusive and respectful to all our clients, and that we deliver in a timely manner. Client confidentiality is also key.
