What do you love most about your job?
It's so satisfying! I find it endlessly fascinating, and history has always been one of my favourite subjects. It never feels like work and every day is different. I enjoy the rapport that forms with my clients as the project progresses and take pride in giving them the best possible results.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have worked in numerous fields since leaving school, including retail, manufacturing, sales and pharmaceuticals. Although I enjoyed the work there was always something missing; the sense that I was really making a difference and the satisfaction of producing something unique and special. I decided to start my own business in 2007 and after many false starts, I created Acorn Ancestry in June 2008. I had a break in 2014 and worked as a care assistant but came back to genealogy as I missed everything about it. So Acorn Ancestry is now Oak Tree Genealogy.
Why should our clients choose you?
I'm a sole trader, not a big company. I see this as an advantage; if a client has a query they don't have to waste time explaining things to someone different every time, they only ever deal with me. This means that I can get to know their various needs and work with the client to create a bespoke family tree. And, they can pay as they go, meaning my services are still affordable even for those who are on a limited budget.

I can offer my services in person, if the client is local, or by phone and email if they're some distance away. This means that I can work with clients all over the UK, including Scotland. Zoom meetings on a one-to-one basis are available if needed.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
My work is mostly done by phone or email, but if I have to meet a client in person then I will practice good hygiene standards and use social distancing for mutual safety and comfort.
